Page 3-6: "Being the eldest, John was required early to assume lots of responsibility. Wm. was a very demanding man. He had always lived a rugged life and he gave no quarter to his children. Obedience was demanded not earned and disobedience was quickly punished. Many punishments were very cruel by our standards now. When John was about three they moved into a sod-house. It had two rooms. ...
One of the highlights of John's young life came when he was about 4 or 4 1/2 yrs old. He had been left all day with his sister Ida about 2 years old, while his parents went to Springview, a distance of 14 miles, but a long trip with a team of horses and a wagon. They didn't return until after dark but John was still sitting on the door step with his sister asleep with her head in his lap. The big surprise - his parents brought a Seth Thomas Clock!! and Glory-be, it struck the hour loud and clear! From then on it was the pride of the family and still is.".
16. Emry, Raleigh. 18 Jun 1996: My wife Terry and I visited my Aunt Alice Reynolds Dougall for lunch at her home in Salem, Oregon. She had Grandfather Reynolds' clock wound up for us. It interrupted her son's (John Dougall) blessing by striking twelve. It was a wonderful reminder of how those of us at the table were connected - and brought back many fond memories of visiting my grandparents when I was a boy. Those were the days before the whir of furnace fans and refrigerators so the clock could always be heard and was usually the only sound that was constant in their home. Others present for lunch on that day were Marvin Meirose, Melvin Meirose and John Dougall's wife and two children.
17. Dougall, Alice Reynolds. Alice Reynolds Dougall's Memories of her Grandparents, William and Isabelle Reynolds and her Parents John and Susie Reynolds. 1992. Page 6-7: "Gradually John took over more and more duties around the farm. He would tell of the year he was eleven years old. The grain, mostly wheat, was cut by machinery called the binder which bound an arm-full of wheat into a bundle and tied it with twine. As these bundles were later fed into a threashing machine someone had to sit on top of the machine where the bundles came by and slash the twine with a sharp knife. John was elected to do that the fall he was eleven. It was a cold damp fall. This boy sat for hours slashing bundles as they went by under him. He would be so cold and stiff someone would have to lift him off the machine. What kept him from falling into the machinery just below him he didn't know. At that time there were no child labor laws to protect the children, and safety was scoffed at. A job needed to be done, that was the important thing to most men.".
18. Ibid. Page 8, 10: "During this time more sisters were being added to his family. Ida, Ethel, Edith, Myrtle, Della and Mae.
His only Bro, Rozelle, was born in 1909, then in 1913 Jessie joined the family as the 7th daughter.
Question - Who Knows? Where did John work after he left home when he was 21 years old - 4 to 5 years unknown?".

When John was about three they moved into a sod-house. It had two rooms - Isabelle must have reveled in such grandness. By that time Ida had been born, and Ethel would soon be born.
Wm. had acquired a number of head of cattle. Their sod was being broken for crops. Wheat became a popular cash grain in a few years.
He developed a great interest in trees. He planted many, some of which are still standing 90 years later. Fruit trees could be acquired from the east. He planted apples, plums, mulberries for fruit. Some unusual variety of soft-wood was also introduced by him. Horticulture must have been of great interest to him in his younger years.".

Ralph Millard had homesteaded adjoining to Wm's place, but not quite as early. Mr. Millard commented that if a staple was missing from a fence post and could not be found on the ground Wm would start cursing and declaring some one was stealing his staples.
Wm was always on the lookout for strangers. If one came to the house he would send Isabelle or one of the children to find out who it was before he made appearance.".

It has been said her mother had approved of the marriage as she was concerned for her daughter's welfare in the rough country to which they had recently moved. Apparently marriage of any kind was better than being a single girl for a while longer. Perhaps the 160 acres was also an inducement of security. Anyway from then on she was to never know a moment of leisure. There were always babies to be taken care of, garden to tend, chickens to raise, cows to milk, cream to be skimmed from the pans of milk, then made into butter and myriads of other duties.".
44. Ibid. Page 3-4: "Over a period of 26 years she [Isabelle Laura Higginson Reynolds] had nine children. The first three or four were close together then scattered out so she always had a small one until she was nearly 50 years old. By then her health had broken, so her later years were times of sickness. ... When John was about three they moved into a sod-house. It had two rooms - Isabelle must have reveled in such grandness. By that time Ida had been born and Ethel would soon be born.".

E-mail: 04-18-98: Andrew Moorman (1689-1756) was the youngest son of Thomas Moorman (1658-1705) and Elizabeth Simpson of New Kent Co., VA.
273. Ibid. E-Mail: 20 Apr 98: Goochland Co., [VA] land records show conclusively that Andrew Moorman Sr. (1689-1756) was married to a woman Susannah as late as 1728. (She provided dower releases on several of Andrew's property transactions between 1723 and 1728). Additionally, Andrew's Goochland Co., neighbor, Henry Reynolds refers to Andrew Moorman as his brother-in-law in his will, probated in Brunswick Co., VA in 1744. Also, Andrew's older brother Charles was married to Elizabeth Reynolds who was a first cousin to Susannah. The Reynolds and Moorman families were adjacent neighbors in New Kent Co. in the vicinity of Whiting Swamp and Black Creek. What we do not have is documentary proof that Reynolds was Susannah's surname or that she was necessarily Andrew's first wife. However, Susannah was almost certainly the mother of Andrew's daughter Lucy (b1723) and son John (bc1728). Thomas and Andrew Jr. were born in c1715 and 1718 respectively and could have had a different mother.

E-Mail: 20 Apr 98: Thomas and Andrew Jr. were born in C1715 and 1718 respectively. Tithe records in Goochland Co., and property records in Brunswick Co. establish that Andrew Jr. was born before 1719. He married late which may have been the source of the 1730 birth estimate. Andrew Jr. died in Georgia in 1761 and his wife and three children all died before 1770.

Thomas had been born in Ireland, the son of Zachariah (c1620-c1680) and Mary Candler Moorman... Zachariah was in Ireland as an officer in Cromwell's Army... That is how Thomas Moorman, Rachel Moorman Adcock's great grandfather, ended up being born in Ireland.

E-Mail: 20 Apr 98: I think Elizabeth Simpson was a widow when she married Thomas Moorman (1658-1705). Whether her maiden name was Clark is pure conjecture. She definitely was not the duaghter of Christopher Clark, who was born in 1681 and whose only wife was Penelope Johnson who he married about 1708. Some sources suggest that Elizabeth Clark Simpson might have been the daughter of Micajah Clark and Sally Ann Moorman, the parents of Christoper Clark. However, Micajah Clark and Sally Ann Moorman did not marry until 1680. Elizabeth Simpson and Thomas Moorman were married by 1684 and the birth of their oldest son, Charles, in 1684 is recorded in the Blissland Parish Register. The birth dates of Mary (1686) Thomas (1788) and Andrew (1789) are also registered in local parish registries. There is no question about birth order or even baptismal dates.

The utmost the law could do was to fine him f4, and this sum could be mitigated according to circumstances. This was actually the case with all those who were fined for 'entertaining Quakers,' at the time Thomas Macy was fined. He stands the lowest on the list, as you will find by examining the Colony records. It is there stated, Thomas Macy is fined 10s, &c. The idea that his property was forfeited, is not correct. It will, perhaps, be new to some people, to know that Thomas Macy went back from Nantucket and lived in Salisbury again, and sold his land, house, &c.".

E-Mail: 20 Apr 98: Several sources report that Lt. Col. William Candler of Ireland's first wife was named Elizabeth Ann Anthony. I have been unable to confirm his first wife's name, only that she married William Candler about 1632/33, bore him two surviving daughters, and was dead before 1642. However, I am also aware that Col. William Candler (1736-1786), son of immigrant Daniel Candler and great grandson of the earlier Lt. Col. William Candler, married Elizabeth Anthony in 1761 in VA. I suggest that the coincidence of names has led some researchers to confuse the two Col. Candlers. (I have several contacts who swear by the earlier Candler/Anthony union, but I remain skeptical.

400. Ibid. E-mail: 04-18-98: Zachariah was in Ireland as an officer in Cromwell's Army which put down the 1649-1652 Irish Rebellion. Mary Candler's father, William Candler, was also an officer in the Cromwellian Army who received a confiscated Irish estate after the rebellion. Candler was a widower, but brought his two teen-age daughters over to Ireland in 1656.

404. Ibid. Page 47: "It does not appear that ... Joan Coffyn, ever resided in Nantucket; and it does appear that she died in Boston, in May, 1661, at the age of 77 years; the Rev. Mr. Wilson, who preached the funeral sermon, spoke of her as a woman of extraordinary character. Mirick's History of Haverhill, quoting from Sewall's Diary, which recorded the fact of Joan Coffyn's death, says he "embalmed her memory.".
405. Ibid. Page 34: "It must also be remembered that Tristram's only brother, John Coffyn, was mortally wounded at Plymouth Fort, and died eight days thereafter. Upon which side John Coffyn was enlisted we have no certain evidence, and the exact date of his death is not known. I assume that, being a younger son, he entered the military service of his country and accepted duty at Plymouth Fort, under Charles I. In what capacity it is not material, but most probably in a subordinate one; for, if he had been Governor of Plymouth, or in command of the Fort, that fact would have survived the historic demolition of that eventful period. John Coffyn most likely fell in defense of the royal standard, and, if so, he died at the commencement of the civil war.".
