Judith Emry Burks has memories of her grandfather telling her about moving with
his family from Michigan to the Badlands of South Dakota in a covered wagon.
He told about having to develop excellent aim at hitting jack rabbits with rocks
because if they missed they had to go find the rock to have ammunition for another
try. He became an excellent baseball player as a young man - even being the
catcher for Grover Cleveland Alexander until Alexander moved up to the big leagues.
Her grandfather had several children at that time and thus could not go with
him. One of the teams he remembers playing against was "The House of David".
They were just local teams who traveled from town to town.
He was married
to Mildred Zella Slane (daughter of Andrew B. Slane and
Gertie Clark) on 14 Mar 1914 in Silt, Garfield Co., Colorado.
