Susannah Emry was the first child of Travis and Elizabeth Emry. She was born
Susannah Adcock 8 Jun 1819, Randolph Co., Ind, was renamed Emry along with the
other members of the family, and in 1838 moved with her parents to the new Quaker
settlement which became Salem, Henry Co., Ia. Here, on 1 May 1839 she was married
to Thomas Hockett.
Thomas Hockett was born 19 Aug 1820, Randolph Co, Ind, 5th child of William
& Rachel (Hodgson) Hockett, grandson of Stephen Hockett (Hoggatt) and Margaret
(Thornbrugh) Hocket and of Thomas & Patience (Dillon) Hodgson, & great
grandson of William & Hannah (Beals) Hoggatt, Joseph & Ann Thornbrugh,
John & Mary (Mills) Hodson & Daniel & Lydia Dillon. Both of Thomas
Hockett's parents & all of his grandparents & all 8 of his great grandparents
were Quakers. Abstracts of Quaker records published in the Hinshaw Encyclopedia
of American Quaker Genealogy & the Heiss Abstracts of Indiana Quaker Records.
They were part of the main stream of Quaker migration which pusshed out of Pennsylvania
in the 2d quarter of the 18th century, down across the central Virginia (with
stops at Quaker meetings Opekan, later Hopewell, Camp Creek, Cedar Creek,) on
into north central NC (Cane Creek, New Garden, Center) then northwest into Miami
Valley of Ohio in the 1st decade of the 19th century (Miami, Fairfield, Lees
Creek, Center) & on to eastern Indiana in the 2d decade (New Garden, Cherry
Grove) & then into the newly opened land in Wisconsin territory in 1837,
later known as Henry Co, Iowa.
Frazier relatives of Susanna (her mother was Elizabeth Frazier) & Hockett
relatives of Thomas were in the first waves of settlers of Salem Twp, Henry Co,
Ia, "Portrait & Biographical Album of Henry Co, Ia" published by
Acme Publishing Company, Chicago, 1888, describes the emigration & settlement
of Quakers, on pages 683-684. In the fall of 1836, several Friends of Cherry
Grove Monthly Meeting, Ind organized an exploration party which visited the Salem
area. The party consisted of Reuban Joy, William Hammer, Dr. Gideon Frazier,
(Susanna's uncle), Stephen, John & Nathan Hockett (Two brothers & an
Uncle of Thomas). The first wagon train made the trip in May & June 1837,
& consisted of Reuben, Henry & Abram Joy, Thomas Cook, Levi Cammock &
Dr. Gideon, Stephen, Thomas & Lydia Frazier (an uncle, 2 first cousins, &
widowed aunt of Susanna). The second wagon train arrived 4 weeks later, composed
of Stephen Hockett, Sr., Stephen Hockett, Jr., John Hockett & Harrison Hoggatt
(Grandfather, two uncles of Thomas) ... [unreadable text on copy] ... Hammer
(Father & two brothers of Thomas, who traveled in this train as a member
of his father's family).
She was married to Thomas Hockett (son of
William Hockett (Hoggatt) and Rachel Hodgson) on 1 May

Fairfield, Ia Ledger, 15 Jul 1859, p 3, col 1, story re disappearance
of Thomas Hockett, presumed drowned trying to cross flooded Walnut Creek. He
appeared on the census in 1860 in Tippecanoe Twp., Henry Co., Iowa.
