Mrs. Fred Etter

Mrs. Marie Luther Etter was born in Posen, Germany in 1862.
She came to this country when 19 years old. The family settled in
Wisconsin but one year later came to dakota Territory to make their
home.

She was married to Fred Etter in January 1887 and lived on the
farm until 1913, when they moved into Wimbledon to make their home.
Mrs. etter is very active in her home and always says she beleives
in taking her exercise in accomplishing something definite instead
of just walking around to get needed exercise.

When they first lived here their nearest neighbor was five miles away
and as the journey was often taken on a stone boat over natural
roads visiting was not induldged in often, as it was more of a hard-
ship than a pleasure to see your neighbor.

When asked about prices of commodities and how they compared
with present day ones, Mrs Etter said she always had to pay $5.00
for shoes and $1.75 a yard for wollen dress goods. When one of her
boys was 3 years old a suit of clothes cost $5.00 but she added, "you
could buy a very nice buggy in those days for $25.00 and when we
could afford it we bought one. I believe we were married ten years
when we thought we could afford a buggy."

Mrs Etter worked here when she arrived from germany. The general
average wages were $3.00 but she was willing to do things she al-
waysrecieved $3.50. She said everything had to be done by hand in
those days. Asked how she managed to get along when unable to speak
the English language she related that one time the lady of the house
asked her to go to the pantry and get a lemon. She went and looked but as
she did not know what she was expected to bring back, returned and
said, "there were not any." A dish of lemons was staring her in the face.
Afterwards she never forgot the word. She was quick to understand and
speak the English language and got along nicely after being there one year.

Mrs. Etter had six children. Five of them are still living and all are
settled on farms near the original home place. There are ten grandchildren.
