. Among the industrious and enterprising farmers of Salisbury Township Mr Cobb is worthy of more than a passing notice. He was the second of a family of five children of Ebenezer and Polly (Miller) Cobb, and was born in Seneca County, Ohio, April 9, 1842. Two other of the children are now living, John J., the eldest, and Sarah A., younger than L. D., Joseph H. and Abigal following Sarah A. The father was a native of Pennsylvania, and was a widower when married to Miss Miller. When L.D. was quite young they removed to Indiana,, where Mrs. Cobb, wife of Ebenezer, died, leaving a husband and five children to mourn her death. Joseph H. and Abigal soon followed their mother to the spiritland. The father, with the other three children, then moved to Michigan, where he married Miss Adelia Hardendorph. He had borne to him by that marriage three daughters: Ella, Anna, and Etta, two of whom are still living, Ella and Etta. L. D. was principally reared and educated in Michigan. When still a youth, however, in 1859, he went to Iowa, where he lived until he joined the army in 1861. He enlisted in Company L, 2d regiment Iowa volunteer cavalry, and served until the following winter, when he returned to his old home in Michigan; but he again soon enlisted, becoming a member of Company K, 6th regiment Michigan volunteer cavalry, under G. Gray, colonel, following the flag of his country until it was saluted from the center to the circumference of the Union as the emblem of a consolidated nation. He served as a non-commissioned officer until December 1863, when for meritorious conduct be was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant,and assigned to Company L, of the same regiment. In February, 1864, he was detailed as A.A.D.C. on General Stagg's staff, and served in that capacity until General Lee's surrender, when, though still young, he was put in command of his company, and with the rest of his regiment was sent across the plains to do duty on the frontier. He served until October 1865, when he received his discharge at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He then returned to Michigan, but his father having moved to Missouri during his absence in 1864, in 1866 L. D. made his father a visit. While in Missouri he purchased a farm in Macon County, no tmoving on to it, however, until May 1867. After living in Macon County about three years he sold out and came to Chariton County, where he has since lived. In March 1872, he was married to Miss Dianna E.,daughter of Rev. John P. and Margaret (Ball) McAdam, of this county.She survived her marriage, however, only a few years. In Novembe 1881, he was again married, Miss Martha J., daughter of Thomas H. and Polly (Gunn) Henderson, then becoming his wife. Her father was one of the early settlers of Chariton County, and located on the farm, where she and her husband now live, in 1835. He was one of the most highly esteemed residents of the county. He was born November 24, 1810, and died March 8, 1881. Her mother died nearly three years before in September 1878. By his first wife Mr. Cobb has one child, a son L.V. There was no issue from his second marriage. They have adopted Sarah Martha, born to Thomas J, and Sarah M. (Griffin) Henderson on the 6th of October 1882. Mr. Cobb's farm contains 205 acres, all well improved, and is in excellent cultivation. He is an energetic farmer and a well-respected citizen. He joined the Baptist church in 1871.Mrs. C. is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Parents: Ebenezer COBB and Polly MILLER .
