History of Kentucky Volume III pg 400-402

Achilles Eubank, the son of Richard Eubank and great-grandfatherof Roderick M. Eubank, was the pioneer of the family in the State ofKentucky, having come from Bedford County, Virginia, when in youngmanhood, in company with the frontiersman, Daniel Boone. When stilllittle more than a youth he had enlisted for service and been acceptedas a soldier of the Patriot Army during the latter years of theRevolutionary war. In old age he married a young wife, Polly Bush, whohad come to Kentucky in 1777, and they then made removal to BooneCounty, Missouri where they passed the rest of their lives. Two oftheir sons were living as late as 1917, one at Abilene, Texas, at theage of ninety years, and still a public office holder, and the other aresident of California. In 1920 some correspondence established thefact that Achilles had really been a Revolutionary soldier, but thatthe son in Texas had died in 1920, at the advanced age ofninety-three years. It is thought that at that time this son and hisbrother in California were the only living sons of a Revolutionarysoldier. Of the other sons of Achilles Eubank, Stephen and Ambroseremained in Kentucky, where the former inherited the old home, whichlater went to Stephen's son, Ben B. Eubank, and in time the ownershipwas assumed by the latter's son, James B. Eubank, mentioned above, whois the present occupant.

PIONEER LEGISLATORS OF CLARK COUNTY ACHILLES EUBANK

Achilles Eubank was one of the representatives from Clark County Inthe Kentucky legislature from 1799 to 1800. He was also one of thepioneer justices of the county and served as sheriff fro two terms. Hecame to Kentucky with Daniel Boone in 1777 from Bedford County,Virginia near the peaks of Otter. His first wife was Polly Bush. Theylived near the Kentucky River, not far from Four-mile Creek. Theirchildren were Millie, who married twice, each time a Callaway; Franceswho married Oliver Rollins; Charlotte who married a Mr. Hieronymous;Stephen and Ambrose, who married Elizabeth Barbour Claborn.

When eighty four years of age, Richard Eubank father of AchillesEubank, and his wife came to Kentucky on horseback to make a visit, being urged to make their home here they decided to do so providedthey might live alone. So a house was built for them In the yard oftheir son and the old couple kept house there.

A story has been handed down from one generation to another of how"Grandpa Dickey" used to go often to see his granddaughter-in law,Elizabeth, wife of Ambrose, of whom he was quite fond and of herchildren at the mouth of Four-mile Creekwhere they lived a few milesfrom his (Ambrose's) father. He rode the old race horse which he hadbrought from Virginia and when he started home he would take off hishat, turn under the side and back to makeIt look like a cap and thenhe would run around the race track near the house. Upon theseoccasions his grandchildren would pull their mother's skirt and say,"Come on mammy, lets go see Grandpa Dickey run a race by himself."Upon one occasion a neighbor seeing him asked If he enjoyed racing. Hesaid, "I do! I do! I have ridden many a horse to victory."

Much of the land acquired by Achilles Eubank has never gone out of thehands of the family. The brick house built about 1812 Is now owned andoccupied by James Eubank of the fourth generation. His father Benowned it and before him Stephen owned it before Ben. One of the firstthree deeds recorded In Clark County (Deed Book 1, page 8) was fromNathaniel Massie to Achilles Eubank, date September 1792,consideration being one hundred pounds for 282 acres on Four-mileCreek.

Achilles Eubank afterward acquired many other tracts.According to the1810 Census Achilles Eubank was the second largest slave holder In thecounty In that year, owning 29 slaves. It has been understood In thefamily that both Achilles and his son Ambrose were soldiers In theRevolutionary War but we have not been able to get a copy of theirservice record. Achilles Eubank also fought through the second warwith Great Britian in 1812 and was engaged In the Battle of the RiverRaisin where he was taken prisoner and carried to Fort George andafter being compelled to run the gauntlet by Indians was paroled bythe British. He was an exceptionally brave soldier. The record alsoshows that Ambrose Eubank was first a major and afterward alieutenant-colonel In the Kentucky forces In the War of 1812.

Achilles Eubank acquired considerable wealth of which he "fed away" inlavish hospitality. In Clark County his name was the synonym ofhospitality, purity, honor and honesty. In later years he went toMissouri about 1830, after dividing his land among his children. Therehe married again and left many descendants. One of his sons by thisMissouri marriage wrote to his nephew William Zadock Eubank ofKiddville a few years ago saying that he was then 90 years of age andhe believed that he was the only living son of A Revolutionary soldierIn his adopted state.
