Philip Claiborn Eubank was born and reared on the old Eubank farm, andwhen still comparatively a young man, just prior to the breaking outof the war be tween the states, was elected sheriff of Clark County.He was a colonel of Home Guards during the great civil strife,following which he settled down to a quiet existence at Kiddville,where his death occurred in 1894, when he was eighty-six years of age.For his first wife Mr. Eubank married Miss Emily Winburn and theybecame the parents of six children: John Ambrose; Christy Winburn, whodied as a bachelor; Philip, who died when twenty-four years of age;Stephen Rhodes, of Pilot View, Kentucky, who married Emily White, ofMadison County, and has no chidren; Temple Bunyan, a bachelor ofKiddville, and Elizabeth, who married Thomas Troy and removed toTexas, but later returned and died in Kentucky leaving threedaughters, Mrs. Eva Saunders, of Sundance, Wyoming; Mrs. EmilyShackleford. of Winchester, and Mrs. Pearl Mopes, of Hazel Green.Kentucky.

Following the death of his first wife Philip Claiborn Eubankmarried Mrs. Susan (Mize) Maple, widow of George Maple and a daughterof Isaac and Betsy (Walker) Mize, of Irvine Estill County, Kentucky.Isaac Mize was one of the leading citizens of his community in EstillCounty, where he was engaged in farming and stock trading, and servedin the State Legislature. He died in 1882, when about ninety years ofage. He and his wife were the parents of the following children:Roderick, who died at Independence. Missouri, where he was formerlyproprietor of the old ferry, and where his descendants still live;John, who died in middle life at Irvine, where he had been engagedin merchandising; Isaac, who married Edith Vaughn and died in EstillCounty, at the age of sixty five years, after a career in farming, adaughter, who married Col. Sidney M. Barnes, a colonel of the FederalArmy during the war between the states, and former proprietor ofEubank Springs, who died at Little Rock; and Susan, who became Mrs.Eubank. William Oldham Mize, a son of John .Mize, married LuellaCockrell and was a merchant at Hazel Green, where he died, andenrolling clerk in the House of Representatives for several terms. Hewas a fine Christian gentleman and passed away at the age ofsixty-five years at Hazel Green, where his son, Carl, still lives. J.Greene Mize, the eldest son in the large family of IsaacMize, theyounger, was a leading merchant of Vaughn's Mill, Powell County.Another son, Samuel, was also a farmer in Estill County, and marriedSusan Mahill, and a third son, John W., is a resident of Vaughn'sMill. Two children born to Philip Claiborn and Susan Eubank lived toyears of maturity: Roderick M. and Simpson Grant. The latter went inyoung manhood to Howard County, Missouri, where he died in 1906, nearArmstrong. He married Lizzie Lee, and they became the parents of fivesons: Vallnon, now in Texas, Philip Lee, Reuben Mize, Floyd Richardand Bruce. Richard Eubank, the great-great-great-grandfather of Roderick M.Eubank, rode from-his home in Bedford County, Virginia, on horse-backto Kentucky, accompanied by his wife, although he was over eightyyears of age at the time and his wife was also in advanced years.There they visited their son, Achilles Eubank, who at that time livedin a brick house near Elkins Station in Clark County, and which isstill standing and in the possession of James B. Eubank. It was thecustom of Richard Eubank to visit the private racing track on the farmof his grandson, Col. Ambrose Eubank, and there to recall glories ofhis younger days, when he had ridden in many races, by trotting hisold Virginia mare around the oval. Parents: John EUBANK and Betsy RAINES.
