FIFTH GENERATION110. James Maltman COMEE
(1) was born on 18 Apr 1777 in Gardner,
Worcester, Massachusetts. He died on 27 Aug 1832 in Gardner, Worcester, Massachusetts.
About 1805 James began making wood and flag seated chairs in his fathers house
on Pearl Street in Gardner, Massachusetts. Aided only with a foot lathe, these
chairs were made entirely by hand. He took on many apprentices among them were
Isaac Jaquith ( who married his daughter Maria), Enoch Brick, Elijah Brick (who
married his half sister Sarah), Elijah Putnam, Lke Fairbaink, Joseph Jackson,
and Artemas Brown. Most of thses apprentices went on to begin their own chair
manufacturing businesses. James used teams of horses to transport his chairs
to Worcester, Boston and other places for sale. Two of James' chairs can be seen
on display in the Gardner Museum. The home where James began Making chairs still
stands and is today Hawke Bed and Breakfast.
He was married to Sally PUTMAN
(daughter of John PUTMAN and Abigail)
on 9 Nov 1801 in Gardner, Worcester, Massachusetts. Sally
PUTMAN(1) was born about 1779 in Fitchburg,
Worcester, Massachusetts. She died on 23 Dec 1863 in Gardner, Worcester, Massachusetts.
