Winthrop News, May 1910
One by one the old soldiers are answering the last bugle call and the
ranks of the boys in blue are becoming thinner and thinner. This week we are
called upon to chronicle the death of one of the old veterans of the civil
war, Daniel W. Palmer, who succumbed to the inevitable at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Chas Sundberg last Thursday, May 19th.
Mr. Palmer had been ailing for some time and owing to his advanced years
there was no help for him and his death was caused by a complication of
diseases.
Mr. Palmer was born at Vassalboro, Maine, Oct. 20th 1837. When nineteen
years of age he came to Minneapolis, where he remained until 1868 when he and
his family moved to Bismarck. It was while residing at Minneapolis that he
met, courted and married, Miss Anna Woodard. The happy event was solemnized in
1862.
Shortly after his marriage the call to arms aroused his patriotic heart
and he enlisted in Co. F. 11th Minn., Vol. serving his country with credit and
receiving an honorable discharge.
During his residence in Bismarck he won a warm spot in the hearts of his
neighbors and all who knew him respected him as a man of high character. He
was of a congenial, jovial temperment and he lived an honorable upright life.
Five years ago he moved into our city with his family and during this
period he has made a host of friends here.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, ten of whom are living
and mourn the demise of their father besides, his wife. They are William of
Bismarck, Mrs. Gillhausen, Minneapolis, Mrs. Aug. Kruger and Edwin Palmer,
Stewart; Mesdames Tony Walters, Chas. Sundberg, Arthur, Frank and Miss Myrtle
of this city and Mrs. A. D. Marmorin of Leon.
The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon. Services were held at the
Sundberg home at 2:30 o'clock and at the Congregational church at 3 o'clock.
The songs. "Lead Kindly Light" "Asleep In Jesus" and "Come Home" were three
beautiful numbers rendered by the quartet, Mrs. Scheman, Miss Lilyquist and
Messrs. Larson and Ostrom. The offerings were also grand.
The pall bearers were: Fred Theneman, Wm. Redetzke, R. Fernbach, Wm.
Lickfett, Henry Truman and Elias Mattison.
The News condoles with the bereaved in the loss of a good father and
husband.
