Idaho LDS temple. He has reference number 22. Charles at one time had a Shoe
Repair shop and spent most of his life in the shoe repair business. He at one
time had a store but his general occupation was a "Jack of all Trades".
Charles was a quiet easy going individual who was kind.
The 1900 Census for Big Butte, Jackson County, Oregon shows Charles owning a farm on which his occupation is listed as farmer. The census shows Charles, Mary his wife, and children Thomas, Cora, Emma and Charles brother as living in the household. Living on the farm next door is his sister Zora and her husband James Rayborn. Next to Zora is the home of Ella Meeker. Charles Baxter Hayes and Mary Jane Ankrom were married on August 1, 1893 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, at 2:45 PM. Charles, who was known as "Charlie" all his life, was a "Jack of All Trades". He at one time had a shoe repair shop, he hired out as a farm laborer, he worked as a painter, anything he could do to make a living. The 1900 census for Big Butte, Jackson County, Oregon, shows Charlie as owning a farm and his occupation is listed as farmer. In April of 1924 the census for Portland, Oregon shows him as owning a shoe shop in Portland. They moved around a lot, and every one of their twelve children was born in a different town, county or state. In 1899, June 3, Charlie and Mary Jane, with their three children, Thomas (Bill), Cora and Ethel, set out from Iowa for Oregon. Charlie's parents and family were already in Oregon, and had been urging the young family to come out. The first leg of the journey was by horse and wagon. They reached the Nebraska line on June 24, 1899, and camped at Ames, NE for 27 days. They then continued their journey until October, 1988, camping near Silver City, Idaho until December 22. (These lay-overs were probably for Charlie to work for a while and accumulate some more money.) Then they sold the horses and wagon and took the railroad at Murphy, Idaho on December 24, for Portland, Oregon. On December 25, they made the final leg of the journey by stage coach from Portland to Central Point, Oregon, arriving late at night on December 26, 1899. (Mary Jane always said that the stage driver was drunk, and just about overturned the coach while fording a river.) They stayed with Charlie's parents, Louisa and Thomas, until February, 1900, when they moved to a rented farm on "Box Creek" . From then until 1914, they moved many times, and in July of 1914 they packed up everything to move to Meridian, Idaho, where a friend of Charlie's had told him it was a good place to open a store. By this time they had nine children and Mary Jane was expecting the 10th. On this journey, Cora, who was then 18, drove one wagon and Charlie drove the other. Bill was married by this time and didn't go. Cora kept a diary of their journey, which is in the possession of Shirley Beach Phillips. They arrived near Boise, Idaho on August 25, 1914, and camped in a tent until September 10, when they moved into a house. On October 12 they moved again near Nampa and stayed there for a short time, then moved to Meridian. Walter was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1914 in Meridian, Idaho. It evidently quickly became apparent that they could not make a living in Meridian (for whatever reason), and in January, 1915 they sold everything and moved back to Halsey, Oregon. From then until 1933 they moved fifteen times, all within the state of Oregon. Mary Jane had kept a log of all the places they lived, but the log ended in 1933. Charlie died in 1945, and they had moved just as often in all of the years between 1933 and 1945. Charlie was a kind and gentle man, much loved by his children. He did most of the cooking, and Cora remembers him fondly as working in the kitchen with a dishtowel thrown over his shoulder. She said he made wonderful baking powder biscuits. He played the fiddle for country dances, playing and tapping his foot in time. He also told stories and sang to the children, songs that had been passed down from generation to generation, old folk ballads. In the 1930s and '40s, as an older man, he loved to listen to the radio, and his favorite program was "The Lone Ranger". He never missed it if he could help it. He died of leukemia at the age of 77. Parents: Thomas Wilson HAYES and Almeda Louisa WILEY. He was married to Mary Jane ANKROM on 1 Aug 1893 in Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa. Charles and Mry were married by Rev. G. W. Mapes at 2:45 pm. At the time of the marriage Mary was living in Glasgow, Iowa. Children were: Thomas William HAYES, Cora (Ted) Belle HAYES, Emma Ethel HAYES, Charles (Bud) Arthur HAYES , Grace Olive HAYES, LeRoy (Roy) Van HAYES, Clarence (Tom) HAYES, Annie May HAYES, Ruby Edna HAYES, Walter Kenneth HAYES, Opal Mary HAYES, David (Rex) HAYES. Clarence
(Tom) HAYES was born on 28 May 1908 in Murphey, Oregon. He died in May 1976
in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. He was buried in May 1976 in Last residence:
OR 97217. He was issued this SSAN 544-09-7778 in Oregon. Clarence was called
"Tom" during his life. Ted Beach wrote that Tom signed his name as
C. T. Hayes. An uncle called him Tom Chit when he was learning to walk. Later
on the name Chit was dropped. He did not like to be called Clarence and everyone
called him Tom.
Clarence was always known as "Tom". His brother Bill started calling him "Tom Chit", after a little bird, when he was just a baby. The name stuck and he was always known as Tom. He was the only one of the twelve children not to have a middle name, and he always signed his name as C. T. Hayes. Parents: Charles Baxter HAYES and Mary Jane ANKROM. He was married to Jane DAY . Children were: Terry HAYES, James HAYES, Cathy HAYES. He was married to Alice FOSS. Children were: Marion HAYES, Richard HAYES. Cora
(Ted) Belle HAYES was born on 20 Feb 1896 in Cincinatti, Iowa. She died
in Sep 1987 in Portland , Oregon. She was buried in Sep 1987 in Last residence:
OR 97223. Cora Belle Hayes was known all her life as "Ted", a nickname
given her by her brother, Bill, who never called anyone by her given name.
As the second oldest child of 12, and the oldest girl, Ted always had to be a
"mother's helper" and tend the younger ones and help out with the cooking
and housework. She was only allowed to go to school through 6th grade, as she
was needed at home. However, she loved to read, and educated herself to the
best of her ability, and had a lovely handwriting. She was quite artistic, and
could draw wonderful farm animals, especially horses, which she loved. She had
a chance to go to art school when in her teens, sponsored by a neighbor who saw
her talent, but she was not allowed to go because of responsibilities at home.
They moved around a lot, and during her life with her family they moved approximately
60 times, and after she was married in 1922, the family was still moving several
times a year.
In 1914, when her father decided to move the family from Brownsville, Oregon to Meridian, Idaho, they took two teams and wagons. Ted was 18, and she drove one wagon, while her father drove the other. She kept a diary of their journey, writing a little each night when they camped. She always remembered her heartbreak when they had to lighten the wagon and she had to leave her box of books behind. They only stayed in Idaho a short time, then sold everything and took the train back to Halsey, Oregon. She was married to George Beach in 1922 and they lived in a small house they bought in St. Johns, Oregon, which later was incorporated into Portland. Their daughter, Helen, was born in that house, and their daughter, Shirley, was born in a small, "lying in" maternity home nearby. They lived at this same address until 1958, when they moved to an acreage near Beaverton, Oregon. Ted loved living in the country, and they had chickens and rabbits, and a large garden. Ted joined the local "Ladies Aid" and enjoyed going to the meetings and hosting them in her home. She held the office of Treasurer at one time. She and George also belonged to the Kinton Grange, and enjoyed helping with the annual turkey dinner that was put on by the grange. She usually volunteered to roast a couple of turkeys or bake some pumpkin pies. All of her nieces and nephews loved "Aunt Ted", and felt that she was a special person. When George died in 1974 as a result of an auto accident, it was a terrible loss to Ted. She managed to stay in their home in the country for a few years, but then when she fell and broke her hip she realized she couldn't stay out there alone any more and moved into a lovely retirement apartment in the Tigard/King City area, where she could have her meals in the dining room and enjoy housekeeping service. In her later years she had severe osteoporosis and was in quite a lot of pain and was quite stooped. She was 91 years old when she died. Parents: Charles Baxter HAYES and Mary Jane ANKROM. She was married to George Loran BEACH. Children were: Shirley Ardelle BEACH , Hellen Cora BEACH. |
