Sallie was able to obtain a patent on the home and acquire ownership of it after Joseph backed out as promised to his son to sign it over to the family when he had the money to do so. When Joseph died in Los Angeles the Hildreth family refused to give Sallie the money needed to travel to Los Angeles to take care of his affairs and burial.
