R. HOWARD was born on 17 Apr 1803 in Tennessee. She died on 25 Aug 1872
in Peru, Indiana. Nancys obituary was printed in the Peru Republican Newspaper
as follows:
Nancy R. Fenimore, wife of Dr. J. S. Fenimore, died Aug 25, 1872. Mrs. Fenimore was born in Tennessee, April 17, 1803, was married in the State of Missouri, 3 Sep 1822 to Dr. J. S. Fenimore, with whom she has traveled almost half a century, next Tuesday being the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day. She has always been religiously inclined and has been a member of the Methodist church over forty-three years; careful in her walk and conversation, she adorned a Christian profession by the actions of a well-ordered life. Her last illness was brief, having been taken about nine days before her decease. During her entire sickness she rested sweetly in the will of Jesus, realizing that while to live would be Christ, to die was gain. --As she neared death she spoke of friends she saw beyond waiting with smiles to greet her. Truly there is lost to earth a true friend, a faithful wife, a devoted Christian gained to heaven, another face in the redeemed host, another voice of praise, new hands to strike the harp of victory. "She rests from her labors and her works do follow her." Service connected with her burial took place at the family residence on Monday, August 26th, in which Revs. R. Toby and W. F. Walker participated: the funeral sermon is to be preached at some future time by Rev. H. N. Barnes, Presiding Elder of West Ft. Wayne district, North Indiana Conference W. F. Walker, Pastor P.S.--The husband, nieces and relatives of the deceased fail to find language to express their gratitude and lasting obligation to the neighbors for their unwearied attentions during the sickness of Mrs. Fenimore especially those dear good ladies, who waited with her day and night. J.S. Fenimore The death of Mrs. Fenimore leaves the venerable Doctor sad and lonely. For half a century they have lived happily together, without children of their own, The Dr. an invalid most of the time and his faithful wife administering to all his wants, sustained by a cheerful Christianity. They were preparing to celebrate their golden wedding on next Tuesday, September 3d. How intimately knit together must be two hearts that have borne the trials and ills of life, as one, and likewise the joys, for half a hundred years! - Ed. REPUBLICAN FROM THE WESTERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE: Fenimore- In great peace, in Peru, Ind, August 25 1872, Mrs. Nancy R. wife of Dr. J. S. Fenimore, aged sixty-nine years. She was born in Tennessee, but removed, a while a child, with her parents to Upper Louisiana since the State of Missouri, where she was raised to womanhood. Her father and brothers were slave-holders, but such was her dislike and opposition to slavery, that soon after her marriage she, with her husband, removed to a free State. She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church more than forty-three years ago, and adorned her profession in conduct and conversation, showing the genuiness of her faith by her fervent charity. Never a mother, and yet few have borne the responsibilities and discharged the duties of this dearest of all human relations so well. She raised a large family of children, borne by others, whom she nourished and cherished with a mother's care. One of these, which she had reared from infancy, being told by her schoolmates when twelve or thirteen years of age, that Mrs. Fenimore was not her mother, went home in distress, and asked if it was so, and when it was confirmed, threw her arms around her neck, exclaiming, "You are a good enough mother for me." She dearly loved and faithfully read the Bible, and was well versed in its contents. She was a subscriber to the Western Christian Advocate from its first issue. Its weekly visits she highly prized. Her health had been failing for several months, but she still attended to her household affairs. her last illness was of short duration. Death found her waiting. When asked by a friend if she was ready, she answered, "I have been for years." As she looked upon her husband, a few years her senior, with whom she had very pleasantly lived about fifty years, she said, "I have nothing to detain me but that white haired old man." And while urging her daughters to take good care of their father, said to him, "You will come soon." As she drew nearer the river, she said. "I see smiling friends waiting on the other shore to receive me." And when the happy moment of her exit came, calmly and without a struggle, she sank into the sleep of death, while the smile that still lightened up her lifeless face , seemed to say, "My flesh also shall rest in hope."-- As an acquaintance of thirty years having sustained, at different times, the relations of neighbor, pastor and presiding elder, and having been selected by her to preach her funeral sermon, farewell, sister Fenimore until, with all the ransomed hose, we say "All hail!" H. N. Barnes FOR THOSE TO LOOK UPON WHO SURVIVE ME. The subject of the above communications are than share my toils and efforts for an honorable and competent sustenance. My afflictions for the last thirty years have been such that I dared not lift ten pounds without hazarding ill effects. Never during that time did she permit me to do so if present. In her youthful vigorous years the house where she presided was a welcome home for many an itinerant. She was ever a liberal friend of the needy; this was proverbial at all points where she resided. Perhaps there has never been a more devoted wife or truer friend. Two or three days before her death she said to those in her death-chamber--"I have no ties on earth but that white or gray haired old man, with whom I have lived nearly fifty years, and he never game me a short, angry word in his life." And I can say, as on that occasion, surely she never in anger said to me, "I will not," or "you shall not." During her last illness she had no pain. When asked if she felt pain she invariably replied --"not a particle, but an entire prostration." She retained her mind perfectly till the last moment, and passed away without a twitch or movement of a muscle--with a pleasant and beautiful smile which remained when the coffin was closed. May heart said Farewell, dear one, for a short period. JOSEPH S. FENIMORE She was married to Joseph S. FENIMORE on 15 Sep 1822 in Missouri. Edward
