His sign had the "S" in saws backward. During prohibition days he spent a lot of time confiscating and destroying alcohol products. It is rumored that he also helped himself to his share before he destroyed it all. While Nelson was in the law profession he was going to arrest two men who robbed a store. The two men hid under the boardwalk and told Nelson to come in and get them. He called the fire department and they hosed them out. This happened on 5 Jan 1905 in Glendale, Oregon. While in Battleground Nelson fell off a roof during a reroofing job and grabbed the rain gutter which came loose and eased his descent to the ground. He was a wonderful story teller spending many hours amusing his grand children with story and songs. He loved his smelly old pipe and was never without it. It is a very peaceful and beautiful location. Sylvia and Lloyd were married 10 May 1930 and enjoyed 59 years and 10 1/2 months as husband and wife. Sylvia spent 3 years looking after her husband while he suffered from terminal cancer. Within a month of his death it became quite apparent that she was also gravely ill with congenital heart failure and had several light strokes. Sylvia was disabled most of her life with the results of polio which she contracted in 1928 when she was just 16 years old. The polio left her with a curved spine and disfigured hands so that her fingers could not be straightened out. In time her fingers became webbed from the first knuckle to the base of the finger. She did lead a very normal and productive life however. She crocheted afghans for all of her children and also for most of the people she knew. She and her husband also loved gardening. They had an over sized lot that was a profusion of flowers and vegetables and was virtually weed free. She had French marigold that she usually bordered her beds with, collecting her own seeds year after year for over 50 years. Sylvia was also a collector of tea cups and salt and pepper shakers which when she got older she shared with her children and grand children. She never worked outside of her home but did take care of other peoples children for over 30 years. She also never drove a car. She did enjoy traveling however and other of their hobbies took them to many places they would not have thought to go other wise. They went gold panning in Washington, California and they went rock hounding over all of the Western states. Lloyd and Sylvia made rock and resin tables for each of their children with the rocks that they collected around the country. These tables were very beautiful and useful. They lived in the same house for 53 years, and was a very proficient homemaker, canning much of their food stuff. She loved baking cookies for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Six months after Lloyds death, Sylvia moved in with her daughter Jeroldine Linhart due to her own illness. Where she remained for the last 7 years of her life. In 1992 she had a severe heart attack which kept her in the hospital for 17 days and was in constant need of care from then on having seizures and her heart was very weak. Through the many years of good health, many family reunions and get together's were held at their home. Sylvia and Lloyd had an open door policy and all were welcome at their home. Many of their children and grandchildren would, in time of need, end up on their door step and were greeted with open arms. Their home was one of peace and rest.
