"Christmas Day - Such a beautiful white world outside. This reminds me of Christmas Days long past when we had more white ones or do I just think so? Going back in memory to Christmas' past. Programs at the Alma Baptist Church when Santa always came in person and gave each child candy and oranges - the tall tree with real candles. Singing some of the old carols we sing today and ' "old December" '. Aunt Matt Underwood's favorite. We sang it every Christmas. Many are gone who were there then and others scattered to the four-winds. Zelma and I were so very fortunate to have lovely Christmas' to remember. While we never received too much at one time, we had just enough to enjoy, tho, I wonder sometimes if we knew how well off we were or appreciated to the fullest what we received. I think this takes age to ripen, perhaps. We shared many toys such as a wagon, sled, play dishes and I remember a little iron stove with iron pots and skillet, but we had our own dolls and cradles. One Christmas we got a pull-toy each - wooden horses hitched to little red carts. I really enjoyed mine to the fullest, and imagine I didn't have it too long for I was a bit rough on my toys. Then there were small spinning tops in those days. Very inexpensive, and wound up on a spool effect on a stem of the top. They would hum as they spun around and the brilliant stripes would merge together and out again - or seem to. Santa would bring two of these each year. We always had a new pair of white stockings to hand up each year, then they were for wearing to Church and S.S. later. Stocking-stuffings then were much the same as now - candy, nuts and oranges, but we usually had a small china-head doll sticking out the top. These too were quite inexpensive then, and extinct now. The bodies were filled with sawdust and they had china feet and arms. I'd give a pretty to have one of mine today - also one of the tops. Homes then didn't go in for trees. Everyone enjoyed the ones at Churches or lodge halls. One year Zelma had spied a tiny pine in the Knob field, so when Christmas came she went and got it. Tho, still quite tiny, we treasured it, and was the only one we ever had. I did have a sled once. All my own, but it came before or right after Christmas, I don't recall which. I was sick and home from school the day it arrived. I can see Guy yet coming up thru the bottom meadow pulling it. He had been to the Eli Underwood store in Tyler City. It was a wood-type structure - yellow in color and the top painted red with the name ' "Princess" ' painted on it. It was my pride and joy for several winter seasons. He, too, has now joined Mother, Father and Zelma, also Hattie and only two of us left now, but they live on in our memory forever. Now a few bits of ' "Christmas present" '. Cecil(?) George called also Gen Phillips both wishing us a Merry Christmas. I called Jess and we called Betty Lou. All well. Watched some Christmas Programs on TV and played records Betty Lou and Al sent. We were well remembered by our precious children and grandchildren. Distance, weather and other conditions doesn't permit them to be with us. We didn't have a tree, but I hope to have next year. From the diary of Ila Beatrice Ankrom Ayer, date unknown. Probably in 1960's or early 1970's.
