bullet John W. ANKROM was born in 1746 in Prince Georges County, Maryland. He died on 1 Feb 1789 in Tenmile Co., Pennsylvania. He was baptised into the LDS church on 2 Apr 1992 in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS temple. He was endowed on 19 Nov 1992 in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS temple. He was sealed to parents on 4 Dec 1992 in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS temple. He has Ancestral File number 4N4Z-28. John Ankrom maintained a Fort on the TENMILE, in Green Co , Pa. It is thought that this Fort was one of the stronger kind, since it was used in 1777 as a rendezvous for the Frontier Rangers under Colonel William Crawford. The Fort is described in pension records as being four or five miles from Fort Jackson (the site of Waynesburg, Pa), and was certainly on the tract of land warranted to John Ankrom under the title "Pocket Money" on February 22, 1788. It was located to the East of the Mouth of Coal Lick on land that may still be owned by the Ankroms. Soon after getting the warrant for the land in 1788, John Ankrom died leaving a Will making his brother William Ankrom, and his brother-in-law, William Wells, executors of his estate and guardian of his children. William refused to act and " Letters Testamentary dated May 21, 1789 were duly granted to the said William Wells" - (Land Office Grants, Harrisburg, Pa.) William Wells then secured the patent for the land as the Administrator of the estate and the land later went to the heirs of John Ankrom. The Will states that Thomas Wells was living on John Ankrom's land at the time of the writing, November 2, 1782. It is known that John Ankrom was in Washington Co., Pa in 1784 when he refused to turn in his property for tax purposes. He received land warranted from Pa. in 1788 and and was taxed for that land in Franklin Township, Washington, Co.
Joseph Archer had an adjoining tract and John Thrasher lived to the West of John Ankrom and Joseph Archer. All three men were members of Captain James Archer's Washington County Militia Company in 1782. A James Pribble states he was stationed here in Archer's Militia Company in 1777 and for several years after that under a Captain Jess Pigman and frequently met men of Archer's Company on his patrols.
John's will was probated on February 1, 1789, so he probably died between the fall of 1788 and the Spring of 1789. His will names his wife Martha; sons Richard Duckett Ankrom and William Ankrom; and an unborn child. His Will is recorded in Record Book 1, p. 97: file A8-1789, of Washington Co., Pa. Orphans Court records show no appointment of guardian for the children.
The Benjamin Lakin Manuscript states definitely that children of John and Martha Ankrom were those shown on the Family Page hereof.

______________________________________________________________

According to his obituary Jonathan Ankrom had "one brother, John S. Ankrom and four sisters Polly Baker, Margaret Millhorn, Janette Stewart and Lavina Lock, all of whom had proceeded him to the unknown country".
Continuing with his obituary: He was married to Michael Thomas July 10, 1855. To this union 9 children were born, 7 of whom are still living: Saul Ankrom of St Marys, M. R. Ankrom of Alma, Susan Ferrell, Elizabeth Waters and Boody Ankrom of Blue, Flora Roberts and LeMarr Ankrom of Parkersburg.
When the war cloud darkened the Southland, threatening to dismember the union, he said good bye to his wife and three small children and placed himself upon his country's alter. On the 14th day of August 1862 he enlisted in "Co. E. 14th" Reft. West Va. Int., Capt. Powells Co. What the 14th went through would fill a volume. Brave West Va. boys, the foremost in the fray. The first upon the battle field the last to run away. When sanguinary struggle was ended and the union preserved Mr Ankrom returned to private life, realizing that the "victory of peace" is no less renowned that the victory of war. As a husband he was true to his vows, as a father he was kind and indulgent, as a citizen he was law abiding and progressive. When neighbors had trouble to settle, Me Ankrom was called upon to settle it, and seldom, if ever failed to bring about a reconciliation and made friends of enemies. On two occasions I remember when the tender side of his life was in evidence many years ago; at a reunion at Middlebourne the boys were "in ranks" when Col. Dan Johnson rode by barring the flag of the 14th, "tattered and town", that they had followed to victory on the field of carnage and some times to defeat, as Mr. Ankrom gazed on the flag that was dear to him, he wept like a child.
After the death of Mrs Ankrom June the 25th 1901, he left the old home and went into business at Reader, later he went to Parkersburg, making his home with his son Lemarr. Mr. Ankrom had been afflicted for some time with organic heart trouble, but still rallied, yet the "fell destroyer" had marked him for his victim, but he could say, "I know I'm nearing the holy ranks. Of friends and kindred dear, For I've brushed the dews on Jordans banks."
As the time approached he expressed a desire to be taken to the home of his boyhood, and when told by his son M. R. Ankrom that every wish should be gratified he was ready for the message which came on the 20th notifying Sergeant Ankrom to report to the Great Commander and receive his reward. On Wednesday at 4 o'clock after an appropriate discourse by Rev. Woods, on the life of the deceased his remains were laid to rest in Beechwood cemetery followed by hundreds of sympathizing friends to rest until the shrill notes of Gabriel's trump shall penetrate the somber confines of the tomb, proclaiming to the slumbering boys that wore the blue and the boys that wore the gray, will march up the shining way keeping step to the music of the celestial buglers, pitch their tents on the eternal camping ground, dwell forever around the resplendent glories of Heaven, where there will be neither wars nor rumors of war - (By request) J. C. Warner, Alma, April 27th 1908. Parents: Richard Duckett ANKROM and Mary Ann DAVIS.
