Josephine Price was born in Petaluma, CA on Sept 9, 1905 along with her twin sister Charlotte. The sisters were close during their young years and even into young adulthood dressed alike. They both went to the Mt Zion School of Nursing and became registered nurses and both worked at their nursing profession for over 30 years.
As youngsters they did everything together. Josephine and Charlotte also took piano lessons, Charlotte always picked the pieces and Josephine had to always play the bottom part.


Charlotte met and eloped with Jack Austin and their closeness began to wane. At about the same time Josephine met a young man newly here from Canada who happened to be renting a room in her graandmother’s house in Petaluma, and the rest is history. The young man’s name was Vivian “Viv” Price, who had followed his brother Hugh to Petaluma, California. Josephine and Vivian had a more conventional courtship and although her father was a stern taskmaster he approved of Vivian and they were married in Petaluma in 1931, a marriage that lasted for over 60 years. During their courtship “Viv” wrote many lovely letters & poems to Josephine.

Josephine and “Viv” had two sons, John and Charles. When a piano happend to appear on loan from some relative the boys were encouraged to take piano lessons. Jospehine though gentle in nature was strict with the practicing routine and the results were formidable. John the eldest had a lifetime career as a piano player in both nightclubs and theatre and Charles received his P.H.D. from Stanford University in musicology and is at present a professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

Family always meant a lot to Josephine. Her home and later apartments in Pacific Grove and Santa rosa were always filled with pictures of her children, grandchildren. She was a wonderful embroideress and made many wall hangings and pictures for her family. She also kntted countless afghans and shawls. she loved dolls and bears and also made many of them for children and for sale at bazaars. She also took a pottery class but was not an expert in that department as Viv would remind her from time to time. Even with her poor eyesight she contined her crafts and correspondence to the end.

Family was the most important thing to Josephine. Her children’s accomplishments, her grandchildren’s accomplishments and her step-grandchildren’s accomplishments were very important to her. She praised people generously and always took the positive spin on things. She never complained about her health problems and had cheery outlook every day. Her doctor called us and said it was a priveledge to take care of her and that she was an amazing lady. everyone who knew her would probably say the same thing.
