Houston SHARP was born on 9 Sep 1846 in Dekalb, Platt, Missouri. Platt co
is now Buchanan.
The below was sent by Kenni Morton and is an excerpt from a book written on the Sharp family in 1972. This book was written by a Genievieve Peters. "I, William H. Sharp, son of Isaac, was born in Platt Co. MO Sept 9 1846. Later this county was divided and the portion where I was born was named Buchanan Co, in the State of Missouri. The identical place was in a log cabin near Contrary Creek, about 4 miles east of Dekalb and 10 miles south of St. Joseph, MO. I was amonth the first children born there in the settlement of what was termed the Platt Purchase. My father, Isaac Sharp, took his first homestead there shortly after he was married to Rebecca Graves, my mother. "Father and mother were born in East Tennessee and moved with their parents to Missouri the year of 1830, and they were married in 1840. "The country was inhabited by Indians, who went in tribes and lived in wigwams. They were armed with bows and arrows. I have seen them pass our place, one after another, miles long; the squaws with their babies in baskets, some of them tied fast to their mothers' backs. The older ones were in large baskets and cinched to the poney's back. Sometimes they would be crying and kicking with all their might. I presume they were tired and hungry. They had a camp ground one mile from our place, where they would stop for weeks and hunt and fish. "When I was 4 years old, my father moved to St. Joseph to a station called Guilford, situated near the Platt River, where he took a claim next to a spring that seemed to come up through the sand and was clear as crystal and always cold. It was a half mile from the Platte River. "During the year 1854, my Uncle Levi Sharp, who was a cousin to my father and who married a sister of my mother, moved from Tazewell, TN, to Missouri and he took a liking to my father's place and the spring of water and bought my father out, giving him $400 in gold coin, which he had brought from Tennessee. I remember my sister and I crying, and mother, too, about the sale of the place. We had just planted an orchard and 20 acres of prairie broke and fenced. We had a fine hewed log house and some improvements besides, but father gave possession and took another claim a mile east of the one he sold to Uncle Levi. " He served in the military in 1863 in MO. Williams father Issac had to take an oath when the Civil war broke out and enlisted in the militia. William took his fathers place and stated the he and the others did more harm than good by living on the substance of the people in the country that was raided so he enlisted in 1863.
