Richard STEELE was born on 12 Jun 1879 in Bay City, Michigan. He died on
15 Apr 1958 in Battle Ground, Clark, Washington. Clinton had a bit of humur
about him. One day Lizzie's brother Edward and family came by to visit, Clinton
opened the door and called out "Well if it isn't Ed and his mess of Greens".
Edwards wife Claudia's children were from her first marriage with the surname
of Green. Lloyd Fenimore wrote that Claudia never like Clinton after that comment.
(Her step son Lloyd Fenimore stated Claudia did not like many people)
According to Muriel Steele, her father, Clinton Richard Steele was brought by his father at age 2 to Oregon, and was left with Mary and John Jewell in Battleground, Washington, at age 6 when Pete (his father; their grandfather) died. He was then bound to the Jewels until the age of 21. Clinton was born on June 6, 1878; probably in Bay City, Michigan. He made his home in Battleground, Washington. The Jewels had lots of land and farmed it. They had another foster daughter named Maude. The Jewells gave Clinton a total of 15 acres. Clinton became a logger, and wouldn't pay taxes. Thus, his daughter Ella eventually bought the land for taxes. Parents: Peter Aaron STEELE and Minerva HETCHLER. He was married to Elizabeth (Lizzie)Nancy FENIMORE in 1907 in Washington. Lewis Steele was a longshoreman in Portland. He was a bachelor. After a longshore
strike in Portland, Oregon, the police pulled him out of the river. After that,
he didn't known anybody and ended up in the state psychiatrict hospital in Salem;
he eventually died there. Parents: Peter Aaron STEELE

Peter
Aaron STEELE was born on 15 Feb 1910 in Battle Ground, Clark County, Washington.
Parents: Clinton Richard STEELE and
Elizabeth (Lizzie)Nancy FENIMORE.Children were: William Alan STEELE. Peter
Aaron STEELE was born in 1841 in Michigan. He died in 1884. According
to Muriel Steele, Clinton's father was named Peter Steele. He was married to
a woman named Mary Hessler, who he met in Michigan and who died November 20,
1935, in Bend, Oregon and was buried at Pilot Butte Cemetery. She was born on
May 30, but Muriel could not remember the year. Pete came from Michigan. Pete
was actually the second marriage for Mary. Her first marriage was to Tom Scribner's
grandfather (she thought). That meant that she was a Scribner first and had
children, a Steele second and had children, and those children were siblings.
That made Tom and Dixie first cousins. According to Muriel, Peter Steele was
in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was wounded in France in 1916 during
World War I. Peter's brothers and sisters were named Caroline Mary Steele, Mary
Steele, Fred Steele, and Clinton Steele.
In the Michigan census for 1870, there is an entry for each surname in a household. Per the Michigan census index for 1870, there is a Peter "Steel" listed in St. Clair County, in Berlin, on page 3 (Microfilm roll 698-699). There is also a "Mary" Scribner listed in St. Clair County, in St. Clair, on page 429 (reverse) (Microfilm roll 698-99). While this should have been after their marriage (and therefore she should have been listed as "Steele" she may continue to be listed as "Scribner" to represent the other surname in her household. There is also a listing for Fred S. Steele (Peter's brother?) in St. Clair County, in St. Clair Ward #2, on page 458R. If that is Pete's brother, then it is likely that more of his family was also in the St. Clair area. His sisters were probably married (and therefore untraceable by surname without marriage information), but either his mother or father may also be listed in St. Clair County, if either survived to 1870. There is a Sally Steele listed in St. Clair County, Port Huron, ward 4, page 367. The 1880 census is easier to track through. Per records contained at the Nationial Archives in Washington, D.C., Peter appears in the 1880 census with his wife, who is listed as Mary and children Frederick, son age 14; Lewis, son age 12; Clinton, son age 1; Charles W. Scribner, stepson age 19 [working in sawmill]; and Jefferson T. Scribner, stepson age 18 [working in sawmill. This family group appears on Stanton Street (no house number) in Michigan, Bay county, Bay City, Michigan, volume 2, Enumeration District #19, page 16, line 33 [Bay City ward 6]; dwelling number 139, family number 154.[******] Peter is reported as having an occupation of laborer in the 1880 census in Bay City, Michigan. All were reported to have birth places in Michigan except Mary. Mary reported her birthplace as New York. Peter listed his father's birthplace as New York, and his mother's as Michigan. Mary's father is reported as having a birthplace of Pennsylvania and her mother as Canada. The Scribner boys reported that their father had been born in Maine. The birth years of all family members were filled in with this data. Mary must have been born circa 1842; Peter circa 1841; Frederick circa 1866; Lewis circa 1868; Clinton circa 1879; Charles W. circa 1861 (corresponds to November 5, 1860); and Jefferson T. circa 1862. According to Robert Scribner, Pete was a foreman at Golden West Dairies (ice cream maker) and lived in El Cerrito, California at San Benito hill, in 1952. He was married to Minerva HETCHLER on 25 Jan 1866 in Utica, Macomb, Michigan. Children were: Peter STEELE , Frederick Albert STEELE, Lewis A. STEELE, Sarah (?) STEELE, Clinton Richard STEELE. |
