PETITION OF JACOB WILEY (WYLEY) FOR PENSION:
Personally appeared before me, one of the justices of the peace in and for the County of Jefferson & Territory of Iowa, Jacob Wiley and after being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he enlisted under Captain Abner Steenborreh or Steen bergin at Shylers Mills, Stillwater County, State of New York, about one uear before taking of Burgoin and was unger General Gates in the Battle of Saritoga. He was enlisted for a term of three years after the battle in which Burgoin was taken. The detachment to which he Belonged was ordered on to meet Cornwallace but when th(y) arrived at Albany, State of New York, he was taken Lame with a defect in his foot and their receved his regular discharge. He shortly after removed to West Pensylvania where he remaind about three years, from thence he moved to Green River, Kintucky and their resided about twenty or twenty one years, near Lewisburgh, from thence he removed to Galleton County, Illinois and there resided until about three years past, from thence he removed Black hawk purchase, now Teritory of Iowa, where he now lives. He says that he had no Education neither could he meet with any person that could give him any encouragement with respect to receving anything for his services in the war. He become far advanced in years and much discouraged being poor and destitue of almost the necessary support to sustain life. He suffered his discharge with all his other Papers to be burned. He also says his first Captain was drumd out of the Ranks for Cowardice, that he knows of no person now living by who he could prove his enlistment. Wm. Drake enlisted at the same time. Where he now is or whether he is liveing or de dhe cannot tell and further the deponent saith not.

National Archives and Records Service. He was buried in Sep 1846 in Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa. Jacob is burried on the farm of August Keller. This grave is just one platt over from that of his daughter Delilah and husband Samuel Combs and his home was just the other side of Samuel on the corner of the property of his son Eli. He died on 16 Sep 1846 in Jefferson County, Iowa. Jacobs will written 21 Sep 1840 (probated 8 Dec 1846):
In the name of God. Amen. I Jacob Wiley of Iowa Territory in the County of Jefferson yeoman being minful of my mortality Do this twenty first Day of September In the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and forty make and publish This my last will and testament in manner Following first desire to be buryed decently . Also I give and bequeathe unto my eldest son Stephen Wiley the sum of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my second son Eli Wiley the sum of one dollar also I bequeath unto the heirs of my eldest daughter mary Homes the sum of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my second daughter Elizabeth Davis the som of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my third daughter Lydia her lawful heirs the sum of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my fourth daughter jane Dunn the sum of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my fifth daughter Hannah Dunn the sum of one dollar also I give and bequeath unto my sixth daughter Delila the sum of one dollar.
To be paid to them respectively as soon as one eyar shall be expired after my decease. Also I give and bequeath untoi my gran daughter Mary jane child of my daughter Delila Combs the land on which I reside being the North east quarter of south east quarter of section thrity four in Township no seventy one north of range nine west containing forty acres.
Also I give to my wife Jane Wiley during her life use of all my plate and household goods bedstead bedding and other furniture with my stock of cattle hogs and sheep with the crop of corn now standing to be disposed of for her support and after her decease if there should be any left to remain my grand daughter Mary Jane Combes
all the rest and residual of my pirsonal estate whatsoever and where so ever of what nature kind and quality soever the same may be and not here3 in before mentioned and disposed of after payment of my debtss legacies and funeral expenses I do give and bequeath unto my wife jane Wiley her executors administrators and assigs to and for her and their own use and benefit absolutely and I do hereby constitute and appoint Samuel Combes sole executor of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal the day and year above writen". his

On 6 Mar 1925, the Fairfield Ledger noted:
"Senator Fultonof Faifield has introduced an appropriation bill in the State Senate providing for an allowance of $750 to erect a monument for the grave of Jacob Wiley, soldier of the American Revolution, located in Cedar Township, Jefferson County. The bill provides that the details of the purchase adn erection shall be entrusted to Log Cabin Chapter, DAR,at Fairfield". It was not until 17 Oct 1929 that the dedication of the boulderr was placed .

Article entitled: A MARKER TO A SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTIONARY, Ceremonies Were Held Yesterday Afternoon at the Jacob Wiley Grave. This article talks about how the DAR placed a native boulder in memory of Jacob close to his grave located nine miles SE of Fairfield. The boulder was first offered by a Mrs S. J. Clapp as a marker for the first State Fair site but was then offered by the S. J. Clapp estate for its current use. The rock carries a bronze tablet and a reconstructed marble slab at his grave. During the program America was sung by the audience, Invocation by REv Fred Crown, Dedicatory by Mrs H. A. Hoopes, Unveiling by Mrs A Atherton who is a great grandaughter of jacob. Address by Hon. C Fulton and Taps by Ben Roger Cossic.
