"Elihu C. Branin died, of heart disease and other affections, ath the residence fo his son, in Dayton, Ohio, on the 15th of February 1860, aged 61 years, 5 months, and 22 days.

"At the age of sixten he was lead to repentance, and a saving faith in Christ. Forty-six years he maintained his profession as a Christian, and ripened for a peaceful and triumphant death by an upright life, diligent prayer, and communion with God. His last days were days of much suffering, but, in the midst of all, he was happy, and not a cloud blotted the pure sky of his soul. His end was peaceful. God be praised. He was the father of seven children, two of whom went to the grave before him. Only a part of the others are on their way to heaven. May his death lead them to life. The consolations of the gospel were administered on the occation of his funeral by Brother J. Lawrence.

William attended Cambridge University from 1580 - 1583. He studied Latin and Greek. From 1583 until 1588 he served as the private secretary to a Mr Davidson who was Queen Elizabeth's Secretary of State. Mr Davidson political career fell into disgrace from his part in the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. William stayed on with Mr Davidson through his trials. On 4 Jan 1575 the Arch Bishop Grindal of York granted to William "Receivership of our Lordship or Manor of Scrooby and all the liberties of the same in the county of Nottingham" and was for life made a "Bailiff of our Lordship or Manor of Scorrby. A plaque in the parish church in St Wilfred placed in 1955 by the descendants of the Mayflower states he was baptized around 1566. William and his father made good money from maintaining the manor as a post for the Queen. William was served on 1 Dec 1607 to appear in the Court at York for Brownism. He did not appear and was finned 20 pounds Sterling. An order of arrest was issued on 15 Dec 1607. due to the fact that arrest meant prison or the gallows or both he chose to go into hiding. On the 25th of Jun in 1609 at the age of 42 he moved with his wife Mary to Leyden, Holland. William was a well spoken, wise, compassionate and tender hearted to the impoverished. William was disposed to wear colorful clothes. He wore a violet cloth coat, black silk stockings, a doublet and various caps ranging in color from white, lace to violet. He was a private and public giver of prayers that were short, humble and acknowledgment of shortcomings. While living in Holland there were periods of time without corn or bread or good drinking water. He lived in Stinkstead, Leyden, Holland. While in Holland William began publishing books over a three year period that were banished in England. This got him into trouble with the King of England and he had to go underground again. On 6 Sep 1620 the Mayflower departed with William his wife and two sons. The rest of his children followed later. His estate had a value of 150 Pounds, a pistol, a rapier, a silver beaker and spoon, a tobacco case, a house and farm at Duxbury, and old Cow, a red cow, a yoke of oxen 10 years old, 63 Latin books, 400 English books and half of a young sow.
