Red was an oilman on the merchant ships machinery He died on 7 Feb 1961 in At Sea. Red was a merchant marine and died on ship while returning from Yokohama, Japan enroute to Portland. He was two weeks out from Portland and died from hardening of the arteries.
Reds obituary was printed in the Portland Oregonian newspaper. It was as follows:

CLAYTON - February 7, Howard E. of 7306 N. Stanford. Beloved husband of Marguerite,; father of Patricia Fenimore, margie Owen; brother of Vera Walsh, Bernice Sowpa, Carl and Burl Clayton. Friends invited to servides Tuesday 10 o'clock at ST. JOHNS FUNERAL HOME 7525 N. Richmond Ave. Entombment Lincoln Memorial Park Mausoleum; AV 6-0627 He was buried on 14 Feb 1961 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. The funeral was at 10 am at the St Johns Funeral Home in Portland, Oegon. Red is buried in the Terrace Court in Crypt #203. Red worked with leather and made several leather purses for family members. One of the purses still survived as of Sep 1998 in new condition. During Reds occupation as engineer with the Merchant Marines he took some chances buy taking saphires out of India and smuggled them into the United States for a Jewelry company in New York. Red and his last wife Margaurite lived at 7306 N. Stanford in Portland, Oregon at the time of his death. Parents: Willard Otis CLAYTON and Martha (Marthy) Ellen WALTER.

He was married to Opal Mary HAYES on 28 Oct 1935 in Vancouver, Clark, Washington. He was divorced from Opal Mary HAYES on 29 May 1936 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Opal stated that she left Howard on the 22 nd of November in 1935. After a divorce Howard was ordered to pay $15.00 a month during the final divorce hearing for support of his daughter Patsy. Children were: Patsy Yvonne CLAYTON .
