He was a charter member of Necessity Lodge I00F and the Alexandria Christian Church. Necessity Lodge Cemetery was laid out on land once owned by Joseph who also was the first to be buried there. Joseph and Sarah moved to Madison County, Indiana @ 1837 and were listed in the 1840 census next to Stephen. In 1845 they sold land the owned near Milton, Indiana on the Whitewater Canal to Francis Walker who was a blacksmith. This land was most likely inherited by Sarah from members of the Griffey Family. Jeri Fredin wrote that a Slave had been dropped off near the home of Joseph during the Civil War by mistake. Joseph took the responsibility of transporting the slave to the next "underground" depot.
