bulletWilliam I (The Conquerer) King of England II was born on 14 Oct 1024 in Falaise, Normandie, France. He died on 9 Sep 1087 in Hermentrube, Near Rouen, France. Reigned 1066-1087. Duke of Normandy 1035-1087. His early adult years were filled with wars and rebellions, including a war with King Henry of France, and with his neighbors in Brittany, Maine and Anjou. In 1049, William married Matilda, daughter of Count Baldwin V of Flanders, forging an alliance between two of the most powerful northern territories. By 1060 William had a considerable reputation as a warrior, for he was generally successful in his wars. He was a tenacious opponent, brutal at times. Many of the wars were fought against great odds, increasing both his reputation and his confidence in the field. One result of these wars was a very large scale transfer of land, either in the form of conquered territory, or in confiscations from rebellious vassals. The duke gave these back out to those loyal to him, transforming his barons into an aristocracy that was loyal to him. During these years William was able to make himself the arbiter of disputes, the fount of favors, and the ultimate authority in the duchy. So the barons increasingly served rather than challenged him. Similarly, the duke ruled the Church. The nobles founded many monasteries and the archbishopric of Rouen was coterminous with the duchy. The powerful families controlled the ecclesiastical positions, and all served the duke. In 1051 Edward of England, who was childless designated William (now aged 23) as his heir. This was a move that surprised and dismayed a number of Saxon lords who felt that one of them was the more natural choice. But Edward felt that only the Normans, who had sheltered him in his exile, were his trusted friends. He invaded England defeated and killed his rival Harold at the Battle of Hastings and became King. The Norman conquest of England was completed by 1072 aided by the establishment of feaudalism under which his followers were granted land in return for pledges of service and loyalty. As King William was noted for his efficient if harsh rule. His administration relied upon Norman and other foreign personnel especially Lanfranc Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1085 started Domesday Book. Know all men by these presents that I Ann Fenimore, Widow of John W. Fenimore, of the City of Beverly, in the County of Burlington and State of New Jersey, considering the uncertainty of this life and being of sound mind and memory, do make, declare and publish, this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

And as to my worldly estate and all the property Real, personal or mixed, of which I shall die seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my descease, I devise, bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following to wit:

First, My will is, that all my just debts and funeral expenses, shall by my executor hereinafter named be paid out of my estate as soon after my descease as shall by him be found convenient. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my daughters Elizabeth Perkins, wife of George W. Perkins, and Anna Maria Powell wife of Thomas Powell Jr. all of my wearing apparel to be equally divided by my executor hereinafter named, between them. ITEM, All the rest and residue of my estate, Real, personal and Mixed of which I shall die seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled at my descease, I give, devise and bequeath as follows, to wit: I hereby authorize, direct and empower my executor hereinafter named, at such time or times as he shall deem most advantageous to sell assign and dispose of all and every part of my said estate without distressing any person or foreclosing any mortgages by reason of which the owners of the houses or lands by which the same are secured may be distressed, but hoping he may be able to so dispose of the said mortgages and other securities as to enable him to make distribution of said estate within one year from the date of my descease, and pay over and deliver: One Seventh part thereof to my Son Eleazer R. Perkins, her heirs and assigns, One Seventh part thereof to my son Samuel Fenimore his heirs and assigns, And I hereby authorize, direct and empower the friend of my late husband, Benjamin Ridgway, now residing in Mount Holly, Burlington county, New Jersey, to retain and keep on his own hands, a one seventh part thereof during the lifetime of my son-in-law, Thomas Powell Jr, and the same to invest and put out at interest or good Security, and the interest and income thereof, annually, at such times and places and in such proportions as he shall judge expedient, to pay to my daughter Anna Maria Powell wife of the said Thomas Powell Jr., for her sole and separate use and in the event of the death of the said Thomas Powell Jr. before the descease of my said daughter, Anna Maria Powell, then to pay the said one Seventh part of my said estate, and by him the said Benjamin Ridgway hereby authorized, directed and empowered to (___?) , to her the said Anna Maria Powell, her heirs and assigns, if my said daughter Anna Maria Powell should die during the lifetime of her said husband Thomas Powell Jr., then I direct the said Benjamin Ridgway to pay and deliver to the heirs of her my said daughter Anna Maria Powell's body, but on a failure of any of the heirs of her body surviving her the said Anna Maria Powell, then my will is that the said one Seventh part of my said estate shall be equally distributed among my other children, their heirs, and assigns, share and share alike. If the said Benjamin Ridgway should neglect or refuse to take upon himself the execution of this trust, then I direct the Orphan's Court of the said Burlington County, shall appoint a suitable person to act as Trustee for my said daughter Anna Maria Powell, but in no even shall my son- in-law, the said Thomas Powell Jr., be permitted to manage or conduct the estate of my said daughter. And lastly, I do nominate and appoint the old and well tried friend of my late husband Benjamin Ridgway now residing in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey, to be the Executor of this my last will and testament, without security either for the distribution of my estate or as …….
