Dr Walter H. Flanders a resident of Milford NH. for the past 2-1/2 years and
formerly of Melrose Ma. And Greenfield NH. died early Wednesday morning Dec-6-1956
at his home on West street, after a brief illness. He was 81. He was born in
Cambridge Ma., March 25, 1875, the son of William Hazen Flanders and Susan F.
(Wells) Flanders.
EDUCATION:
Dr. Flanders graduated from the Worcester Academy in 1895, from B. U. medical
school, in 1899 and served his internship at the Mass. Memorial hospital in Boston.
He affiliated with the staff of the Melrose hospital in 1904, and retired from
active service there in 1939. He served as the Melrose school physician from
1904 to 1946 and as high school medical adviser from 1933 to 1946 with two terms
as a member of the board of health and two years on the Pneumonia program under
the State Board of Health.
MILITARY:
He was a veteran of World War 1 in the navy and a Lieutenant Commander in the
naval reserve from 1921 to 1939 with service in the 1st Bat. Fleet and 13 years
as medical officer of the 1st. Sqd. Aviation at Squantum Air Base from 1920 to
1923. Also with the Veteran's Bureau in the Hospital Inspection Service. He was
Senior Medical Examiner for the selective service in Melrose during World War
11. He had licenses to practice Medicine In Mass. N.H. and Maine.
He was a member of the Massachusetts Homeopathic Society, the Massachusetts Medical
Society, the American Medical Association and a past president of the Eastern
Middlesex District Society. He was a member of the Sons of Veterans of the Civil
War, the American Legion in Melrose, a member of the Milford Baptist church,
the Melrose Grange, the Pomona State and National Grange.
He was actively interested in yachting and was a member of the Boston yacht club
for 17 years serving as fleet surgeon for two seasons. He was married twice,
in 1907 to Julia Dennis and in 1931 to Jessie Lindsey Smith.
Dr. Flanders was cremated at the Ecklund funeral home of 23 High St. Milford
NH. His ashes were spread over the bay in Marblehead, Mass.
Juila died Oct.2, 1942 and buried at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose Mass.
Jessie died Nov.7,1979 at Middlesex Fells Nursing Home and buried at Wyoming
Cemetery. Melrose, Ma. Julia Thorndike Dennis + and Walter, Hubert Flanders
