374. Charles W. Wells was born on Jun 2 1847 in Wells, Maine in the county ofYork (shire) est in 1653. He died on Jul 12 1914 in Marshalltown, Iowa, in the County of Marshall est.1846. Charles W. Charles W. Wells an old resident of Jefferson township, and for fourteen years of this city, died at 9:20 PM Saturday at his home at 910 West Main Street, after a long illness due to diabetes. Mr Wells has been a victim of the diabetic trouble for almost eight years, and last Feb. gangrene developed in both feet. For six weeks Mr Wells was in the hospital, and made marked improvement. After the trouble had quieted down however Mr Wells overexerted himself in looking after his farm, and began to fail. He had been growing worse gradually, and last Thursday the right foot was amputated in an attempt to ease the septic condition.
Mr Wells was a native of York County, Maine having been born June 2, 1847, in the village of Wells, reared by his father Richard Wells and mother Tabitha ( Littlefield ) Wells on there farm, he attended school in Wells, Maine.
He came west in 1865, was at Davenport for a year, and then came to this county, where his brother, John Storer Wells, had preceded him. The two brothers worked for different farmers of the Laurel neighborhood, saved their money, and acquired holdings of land. Charles Wells bought 170 acres, two and one-half miles west of Laurel, to which he added at different times adjoining tracts. His Jefferson township holdings, at the time of his death totaled 480 acres of finely-improved land.
Mr Wells retired from the farm shortly after the death of his wife, and in 1900 came to this city, where he built the home where he died. Mrs Wells was born Sarah Winchel and was a foster daughter of T.S.Gilson formerly of Laurel. Mrs Wells died at Laurel on June
Surviving Mr Wells are his only daughter, Miss Jeannie Wells, a senior in Lake Forest University, Lake Forest ILL. and two brothers and two sisters. The brothers and two sisters are John S. Wells, of Laurel, IA. born 1-12-1837, Alexander B. Wells of Menominee, MI. born 4-20-1840. Mrs Mary Ann ( Wells ) Wilson, born 2-23-1835, wife of John Wilson of Chicago, ILL. and Mrs Susan Fannie ( Wells ) Flanders, born 4-26-1849
wife of William Hazen Flanders, born 10-4-1841 who live in Melrose Ma. They had one son Walter H. Flanders born 3-25-1875. He was married to Julia Thorndike Dennis, born 6-20-1886.They had two sons, Richard Wells Flanders born 12-3-1908 and Walter Hubert Flanders Jr. born 5-30-1910.The letter has been at her brother's home for several weeks. The only other member of the family, a sister, Mrs Sarah A.( Wells ) Carey, wife of George Carey, who died in Boston on Sept 20, 1872.
Funeral services will be held from the residence Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM. and the burial will follow in Riverside cemetery. The body of Mrs Wells, and that of her son Howard, who died at the age of 8 in 1890, will be disinterred at Laurel and reinterred in the family lot here.

He was married to Sarah Winchel on Feb 26 1872. Sarah Winchel was born about 1849. She died in Laurel, Iowa. in the County of Marshall. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown, Ia. in the County of Marshall. Charles W. Wells and Sarah Winchel had the following children:
