Walter was a farmer, and did contractor work during the oil boom. He had over 100 head of mules building slush ponds and dikes using plows, fresnos, scrappers, and pipe wagons. He was noted for having nice harnesses on his mules decorated with celluloid rings and chrome studs and buttons. He built the south pond (Map #___) on the 120 and some of the dikes in Arkansas City.

Walter and Maude had twins in the Winter of 1909, Burl & Bernice. Burl was Adapted by Walter's sister Stella and her husband Cyrus who did not have children of their own.
