About Our Family Research

I often wondered as a child where everyone came from. Growing up in Chicago, one crosses many different races and cultures and being young it can sometimes be confusing.

As I grew up and attended church I began to realize the importance of our ancestry, our long roots, and how in one way or another we are all related, regardless of race.

I didn't begin researching our "Roots" until I was in my thirties and this has been a long and will be a never ending process.

To collect, edit and publish ones family history, is a work of many years. The author of this history has given such time as could be spared for the purpose during a period of fifteen years, and yet the work is not as complete as could be desired. Some historians of many families have been busy in their labors a much longer time, and yet their tasks remain unfinished. Information sought from several sources that have been repeatedly promised has not been forwarded, but the pressing demand for the book will not admit of further delay.

Like the publication of all family histories, this work has been largely "a labor of love." No one who has not given the subject thought can comprehend the difficulty of gathering together the names and other items of so many individual members of the many families represented in a work of this character. Records of towns have been searched. Old family Bibles have been reviewed; libraries of several cities have been visited; church histories and town histories have been carefully looked over; many authorities have been investigated and numerous letters to correspondents have been written for desired information, with a hope to make the work as complete and correct as possible. The author has found in some few instances discrepancies of date when comparing records obtained from different sources. In such cases, however those that have seemed the most authentic are herein quoted.

The idea of bringing together records of the scattered branches of families descending from John Francis; was first suggested by my father, Charles Alexander Francis (b: November 17, 1929).

"To trace lineage-to love and record the names and actions of those without whom we could never have been; who molded and made us what we are, and whom the very greatest of us all must know to have propagated influences into our being which must subtly but certainly act upon his whole conduct in this world-all this is implied in ancestry and the love of it, and is natural and good."

"Westminster Review, July, 1853"
