Jonathan Littleberry Freeman (son of William Freeman and Frances) was born August 22, 1842 in Cass County, Georgia (now Bartow County), and died January 10, 1918 in Greenhill Community, Titus County, Texas. He married (1) Florence Allen on Abt. 1872 in Alabama, daughter of Lee Roy Allen. He married (2) Mary Hamilton Rowe on Abt. 1878 in Texas.

Includes NotesNotes for Jonathan Littleberry Freeman:
After the Civil War ended in 1865 Jonathan was mustered out of the Confederate Army at a place called Little Washington, Georgia, located somewhere near the South Carolina border. He returned to his home in Cass County, Georgia which was renamed Bartow County. He was about 19 years of age at this time. His family resettled across the border into Alabama in the Sand Mountains. (Exactly what part of the mountains is not known by anyone but the older Freeman's I once met always said we came from Sand Mountain, Alabama. They also said we came from Tallapoosa, Alabama which is located in the southern portion of the state below Birmingham.) It apparent Jonathan Littleberry Freeman met and married Florence Allen in Alabama sometime in 1872, but it is not known whether he met and married her in the Sand Mountains or in Tallapoosa. Their first child, Katie Elizabeth Freeman was born in Alabama (according to census records) in February 1873. Their second child, John Vernon Freeman was born April 01, 1875. Their third child, Florence Freeman was born in 1877. Sometime between the birth of Florence and the time he married his second wife (Mary Hamilton Rowe) in Navarro County, Texas in 1878, the family migrated to Texas settling in Navarro County, Texas near a community known as Blooming Grove. He and a brother, William, each supposedly purchased a seciton of land, digging a good well on the line separating the two sections, and shared in the water. Desendants stated he was instrumental in helping to build the first building in a town later called Corsicanna.

About June 1878 he remarried a Mary Hamilton Rowe (a widow with a son) and then they had two children, Robert Miller and Francis Marion. Sometime between June 1878 and April 1879 they resettled in Titus County, Texas in the Nevill's Chapel Community. He purchased a great deal land running from the current County Road No. 3205 on the West, to County Road No. 3210N on the East, and from County Road No. 3210 on the North and County Road No. 3207 on the South. This land was south of the Nevill's Chapel Cemetery and ran from one hill on the west, down across the bottom, and over the hill on the east. Evidence of this is that son Robert Miller Freeman was born in Titus County in April of 1879 and Francis Marion Freeman was born in Titus County in November 1881, according to census records.

Jonathan purchased land on the north side of what is now County Road 1605 about 500 feet east of the Greenhill Road where he dug a pond and built a mule operated cotton gin. (in later years his daughter granddaughter Ida would marry Loyd Rogers and he would sell this gin to Loyd's dad and it would become known as the Rogers Gin.) In 1898 Jonathan built a steam operated cotton gin in the Greenhill Community and it was operational until about 1939 when it became idle. I played in this old cotton gin in the early 1940's as a young boy and remember well what it looked like, all those pulleys and belts inside, the gin stands upstairs, etc. It was torn down about 1945.

The oldest deed I can find a duplicate of is a deed from Ruben Freeman which shows he transferred ownership to Jonathan in 1888. No one knows who Ruben Freeman was at this writing, but it is supposed he was a relative. Since the courthouse was burned and most of the records no older deed than that in 1888 has yet been found.
