Includes NotesNotes for Susan "Ella" LaForge:
"Great Grandmother was with us durung the hurricane of 1938, I think, because my folks went to get her where she lived in Middletown, Conn., because the Connecticut River flooded Middletown at that time. So she stayed with us in Yalesville. She slept on the sun porch where Richard usually slept." --Ken Genest
"My great-grandmother, Susan La Forge, in her middle 90's, lived in a nursing home in Middletown, CT. We used to visit her there occasionally. She was visiting us at our home in Yalesville, CT, when the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 (September 21, I think) roared through. Trees on the hillsides at Lake Sunapee (one of my parents' favorite vacation spots) were twisted into rubble. As is the case with most hurricanes, there was at least that one tornado." --Rich Genest
"She didn't speak with a French accent. (I never knew she was French at all until long after I was grown up, and I was aware of many people on my Dad's side with thick, Canadian French accents - even Rose had a bit of an accent. 'Three' would be procounced 'tree.' I think Great-Grandmother was French and Yankee, like me. :-) " --Ken Genest
Name origin: blacksmith -> forgeron; became Laforge
Ken says: "I never heard Mom talk about her Dad's father dying, or at least I didn't pick up on it.
But that's the lady, "Ella," who was in a rest home in Middletown, Connecticut when my age was in the single digits. I do seem to remember them referring to her as Ella. She was 85 when she visited us in 1937, and then lived five more years.
"I also remember her visiting our house in Yalesville once, and her sleeping (spending at least one night) on the sunporch, which was set up as a bedroom. She was very, very small, maybe 4'9" or so, and very thin. She also was very old at that time. She was Grammie's Grandmother.
"What surprises me the most is that Ella's mother was born in England. Next most surprising: father born in France.
"Mom (Grammy) told of someone in her ancestry who went off to the civil war as a drummer boy. I think she said he was thirteen at the time. Maybe an older brother of Ella, Freddie's mother?"
