Written to Lin Friend by Clara Manges about the Friend family history:

This list will probably sound very worthless - confused and complicated.
On the Friend side, you probably know that my mother’s father and my husband’s father were brothers. So anything relating to Friend gets you two ways. So far as I know, there was nothing but English blood on the Friend side until George’s family, which had Scotch-Irish.
The legends are: 1st - That a fortune waited to be claimed (in Eng.) by the heirs of Fletcher Friend. Also on the Kemp side. 2nd - That three brothers, Sirs William, Charles, and John, had been banished from England. They went to Switzerland or Sweden, then to America. Supposed to he the beginning of Friends here. I know the old Maryland History mentioned an early settler John Friend who surveyed a plot of gov’t ground in Washington County, called it Friend’s Choice. Later went to *Saug Run in Garrett Co., claimed another gov’t grant, called it Swede’s Delight, then moved on to Mo.
My grandmother was a Friend, too. Her folks came from Mo., were the high brows, rather well to do.
My grandmother talked of her folks, but I was too young to be interested in remembering names, so I only know her name was Prudence. She had a brother Harry. He had a son *Laypete.
Her husband, mother’s father, was Fletcher. He had brothers John B., George’s father Andrew, *Benj., Harry. All fought in Civil War. Only one slightly wounded. His mother was KEMP. His grandmother was a Green. She is the girl in the hair-raising story:
All her family were massacred by indians when she was 12. They broke her arm with an arrow. She managed to hide and survive by walking 20 miles through wilderness to next log cabin. After going to house and finding all scalped, baby still alive, she took it with her. I wish I had inherited some of her cool nerve.
Grandpa had a sister Sarah, another sister. I don’t know her name. She was disowned by family, counted dead, because she married a man with indian blood. I have a faint memory her name was Maria.
My father’s father’s family tree is supposed to include French, Dutch; some where German. I saw in my grandfather’s papers a drawing of a land plot deeded to Christian Manges, a beautiful handwriting for his sig., and my understanding has always been he was French and was my granddad's father. My grandfather was a man of few words, so I never heard him talk of such things. I do know his family were cabinet makers, very skilled craftsmen, too.
I think my granddad’s mother’s name was Hannah Ulani, whether that is Dutch, German or what?
My granddad’s name was Uriah. His wife was Holland Dutch. She was Hannah Bittinger. Grandpa said once, his mother was Hannah, his sister was Hannah, and his wife was Hannah. Same like the Margarets in the family now. I don't know anything of his sisters, brother or anyone.
My father left home at an early age. I never saw his mother at all, very little of his father. The only branch of the family I’ve ever heard anything against is the Bittingers, who are supposed to have had that terrible Dutch temper. I never heard of any prison sentences, crimes of any sort.
You’ll find many Kemps among military recordings, Friends on the honor roll at Hagerstown from French-In. War, Friends on jurys, teachers, etc. You’ll find Manges and Friends among the rich, Manges in the Social Reg. among some famous M.D.s. But when you come right down to it., we have all been too inclined to wandering to have family records. I’m sorry. I hope Margaret is successful in finding out either good or bad. I’ve wanted to a lot. -Mom
