---------- per Ken Genest -------------------------
"Now. My opinion of Esther Paul. Hm. I'm going to be honest and objective (one hopes) about her. She was a nice and mild-mannered person, easy to get along with.
"The first time Jackie brought me home to meet her, she got all excited because I had French ancestry. Seems she liked that. Probably was into french impressionist paintings and Debussy music and stuff like that. Kind of superficial, it seemed. But she was always kind and generous with us.
"I don't think we treated her as well. I remember she left her Kodak Pony Camera with us for a long time. Most of those early pictures of you kids were made with it. It broke down and we didn't get it fixed. I think we gave it back to her that way. That was rotten of us, and I don't think it did a thing for interpersonal relations.
"Jackie always had resentment toward her, for things such as making her wear clothes to school that her mother liked but she didn't, and more lately for giving us stuff she didn't want any more, which made her feel that she was just using us for a dump, to palm off old stuff on. That's a generational thing (depression years, the thirties, did it to them) because Sharon's mother is always bringing us stuff she gets at flea markets and garage sales for a dollar :-) , also. Sharon's mother also made her wear clothes to school that she didn't like I don't know that I can blame that on the depression but rather on a controlling personality, which both Sharon's mother and Jacqueline, exhibit.
"She often talked of things she'd like to do (raise mink, etc.) as if she would really do it. But they seemed superficial, will-o-the-wisp things that we knew she would forget before she ever got to them.
"Another thing, and this gets more important. She had cats, and they were allowed to do anything they pleased. That involved chasing each other through the apartment as though they were tigers in the jungle, in the process tearing to shreds couches, draperies, anything that could be shredded. And here's where it gets serious. She told me over the phone one day that she never disciplined Jacqueline (either).
"I always liked her and got along with her until one day long after I'd married Sharon and Esther had gotten a lot of really bad rejection from her daughter that I decided to call her and see how things were going. This was not long before she died. This was a mistake. In talking to her, I revealed that I had forgotten something I should have remembered, I forget what :-) , and she proceeded to talk harshly to me because of it, something she'd never done. I got the impression that she lumped me into a bundle with her daughter, also a mistake. At that time she had made coats or something for all of you at Christmas time, and brought them over and had been rejected by her daughter right then and there.
"I hope this helps you round out a more complete picture of Nana, Amy. Let me know if there's anything else I can tell you."
