"My ancestry, as far as can be determined, is of English and French origin.
"On my father's side of the family, my great-great-great grandfather was the last one to live in the old country, (France) and the first one in the New World. At that time the family name was Genest de La 'Abord de Fere Rouge. It remained so until my great-great grandfather shortened it to Genest. My Great-great-great grandfather came first to Canada. His son, Fabian, was born in Canada but came to the U.S., where his son, Alexander was born. Alexander returned to Richmond, Canada, where Alexis, my grandfather was born. He, in turn, came to Fall River, MA, in The U.S. with his brother, doing carpentry along the way. They finally settled in Waterbury, CT., where my father was born. Later they moved to Cheshire, CT, and then to Meriden, CT, where I was born.
"On my mother's side, lineage can be traced back many generations without leaving the U.S. Although his identity is uncertain, one ancestor was in the Revolutionary War. The records dating back to him are available at Northampton, Mass. Two of my great grandfathers were in the Civil War. One, being exceptionally large at 14, joined as a drummer boy. His name was Emmerson Prouty. He married Myra Graves and to them was born my grandmother, Edith Prouty. To them was born my mother, Mildred, my uncle, Walter, and my Aunt Muriel. The other, married a Susan LaForge, whose father was born in Paris, France. To them Frederick Sparks, my other grandfather was born."
