He first engaged as a clerk for James Langdon of Montpelier, Vt., and soon after formed a partnership with Chester Hubbard in trade, with limited capital with good success. About 1821 he formed a connection with James Langdon; in a few years, when Mr. Langdon wished to retire from active business, Mr. Spalding
bought him out, making a debt of over $70,000. He built one of the best brick houses on State St. In politics he was a Whig and Republican and served several years as State Treasurer, and Assistant Judge of the County Court, all of which offices he filled with credit to himself, giving good satisfaction to the
public. He was one of the first movers in the cause of temperance. He objected to have liquor used and sold in his store, and was one of the first who refused to furnish it at a public gathering at his house.
