AVID CARPENTER:
At the close of the war he returned and soon after married Azubath Allen, daughter of Daniel Allen. About 1790 he removed to Landgrove, Vt., where he resided for 18 years. His first child was born in this town Aug 26, 1787, and this is the first birth on the town records. He was a poor boy bound out to service at an early age, but as he became older he was dissatisfied with his usage and determined to leave; he stole his indentures from his master's desk and hid them under a stone on the premises. After he became of age he returned and found
them all safe. He never had the advantages of a common school education, but he learned to read and to keep his accounts, and became a self educated man. He represented the town in the Vermont Legislature in 1800 and in 1802. He held the office of justice of the peace and other important town offices. He removed to Keene, H.H. in 1807, where he died in 1845. He accumulated a handsome property, to the reported amount of $40,000.

In 1816 he purchased No. 218 which he sold the next year. In 1822 he purchased No. 35 which he sold the next year. During this time he owned this farm he deeded the water right to four men in the village.

Military: When he was about 16 years of age, he volunteered and joined the
Continental army, and was one of the guards at Major Andre's execution.
Military: His Revolutionary war service is also found in Keene History.

276. DANIEL15 CARPENTER (WILLIAM14, BENJAMIN13, BENJAMIN12, JOSEPH11, WILLIAM10, WILLIAM9, ROBERT8, JOHN7, JAMES6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, JOHN3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born 1749 in Wilbraham, Massachusetts294, and died 1811294. He married LUCY NICHOLS294.

Notes for D
ANIEL CARPENTER:
He settled in Wilbraham, and moved to Pittsford thence to Barre, Vt., in 1793, where he died. In 1814 his house was destroyed by fire also the contents among which were the records of the Carpenter family and other papers.

The following was taken from the History of Pittsford, Vt.: "In the history of Pittsford, Vt., we find that Daniel Carpenter located here with others in 1792. The father of Daniel was born in England (New England) and came to America when a young man. (This record will prove the tradition to be incorrect.) William the father was born in Swansea, Mass., then called New England and married Hannah Needham and settled in Greenwich, R.I., where his son Daniel was born about 1749. Daniel made his first purchase in Ludd Hollow in Pittsford, Aug. 11, 1793."

JESSE15 CARPENTER (WILLIAM14, BENJAMIN13, BENJAMIN12, JOSEPH11, WILLIAM10, WILLIAM9, ROBERT8, JOHN7, JAMES6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, JOHN3, RICHARD2, JOHN1)294 was born 1749 in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and died 1843 in Nelson, Madison, New York294. He married (1) RUTH STREETER294. She was born Unknown. He married (2) DORCAS COOPER294.

Notes for J
ESSE CARPENTER:
Reminiscences of Jesse Carpenter No. 1618, father of Elijah Carpenter, No. 3445, furnished by Mary J. (Carpenter) Dean, No. 7204, daughter of Daniel Carpenter, the grandson of Jesse:

"My great grandfather, Jesse Carpenter, father of Elijah was a real live Christian. I lived for five years in the same family with him; but as he has been dead more than 40 years I have forgotten much. He was a stanch Baptist, an honest man, a good husband and father and a lover of his country. His sayings were such as these; one evening as we were sitting by the fire he said 'so many years ago to-night I was in Camp at Ticonderoga'; he said that his grandfather or his great grandfather (I have forgotten which) had three hundred and sixty-five dwelling
houses in the city of London, and on the top of his own house there was a fish pond. It seems to me (Mary J. Carpenter) that great grandfather had a brother William who composed a little book of poetry, the title of which was 'Hasty Pudding.' I read it but I can only remember a few words, a couplet which ran
thus;

'The crooked spoon just fitted to the lip
And taught with art guilding Mass. to dip.
And in haste is made and in haste is eat.'

He was a strong Anit-Mason, and composed some poetry on that subject which was well received. I once asked him if he was in the battle of Bunker Hill, and I think he said that he was not, but carried water to the soldiers at that time. He married Ruth Streeter. She was very decided in everything. She came to Nelson to live when I was very small. He spent the last years of his life making baskets, which furnished him with all he needed. He died about 1842 aged 90 years or more. At the age of 70 years, he married his second wife, Dorcas Cooper, with whom he lived five or six years. He had powder blown into his face, which caused the children to say his face looked as though it was muddy. It was imbedded into the skin so that it could not be got out, and it sometimes troubled him with an intolerable itching. Of his brothers and sisters I know nothing."

(This letter was transcribed by Henry Martin Dean, Hingham, Mass. Jan 28, 1883.)

If the tradition in the above letter be correct in regard to the number of houses owned in England, it will show conclusively that we are in the line of John Carpenter, town clerk of London, (through his brother John, his heir,) as he owned that number of houses or more, and had by tradition, a reservoir on top of his
house.
