Notes for DAVID CRAWFORD: David was given the commission of 2nd lieutenant in the 11th regiment U.S.A., raised in Vermont and New Hampshire, in the war of 1812. He was promoted to be 1st lieutenant and was stationed on the frontier of Vermont and New York in the winter of 1813 and 1814. They halted in the woods at French Mills, N.Y., Feb. 12, 1814; from there they went to Watertown, N.Y., and thence to Buffalo, N.Y., where the forces concentrated on April 14, with a view of the invasion of Canada across the Niagara river. In April, 1814, he was raised to the office of adjutant in the 11th regiment. The army crossed the Niagara at Black Rock, on the night of July 2, and immediately invested Fort Erie, which surrendered in the afternoon of July 3; on the 4th, General Brown took up his line of march and encamped at Chippewa; on the 5th, about 3 p.m., the enemy were seen approaching them; the contest was short, brilliant and decisive. The next battle was at Bridgewater; the battle was commenced by General Scott. In this battle David was appointed brigadier major and was ordered by General Scott to reform the brigade, which was promptly done on the field of battle under the heavy fire of artillery and musketry. Having distinguished himself at this battle and at several subsequent engagements with the enemy, the general reported him to the war department as having shown great courage and ability. The secretary of war appointed him captain in the U.S. army, his commission to date from the 17th of September, 1814; he was the youngest captain in the field and was retained as captain after the war was over; but he resigned and returned to his home in Vermont. |
