Notes for JARIUS HARVELIN CARPENTER: He obtained his education in the public school of the district where born, and by attending an academy for three terms at Holliston, Mass. and a select school for about six weeks in his native town. His preparatory law studies were commenced in the office of Fred Hovey, Esq., at Eastford in 1844, and completed in the office of Hon. Loren P. Waldo at Tolland, Conn. where he was admitted to the bar in March, 1847. Thus far he made his way by school teaching, work on a farm and in a shoe shop. In the early fall of the last named year he located for the practice of his profession at Willimantic, Conn., where he remained till the spring of 1837 when he removed west and located in June of the same year at Madison, Wis., where he has ever since and still resides. Mr. Carpenter early in life interested himself in public matters especially in the public schools. He was for several years a member of the schoolboard in Willimantic, Conn. Since residing in Madison, Wis., he has served on the city school board for 28 consecutive years and was president of the board for 23 consecutive years. At the end of his last term he declined further service. In 1874 Yale College gave him the honorary degree of A. M. In 1876 the Wisconsin University gave him the honorary degree of LL. D. In 1877 he was appointed by the Supreme Court of Wisconsin to revise the probate laws of the state. His revision has remained the probate code of the state since that time with slight amendments, several of which were made upon his suggestion. In 1878 the Supreme Court of the state appointed him one of two commissioners to supervise the printing and indexing the revised statutes of the state just then completed and approved by the Legislature. In 1868 he was made a law professor and dean of the law faculty of the University of Wisconsin and organized the law department. In 1869 he was removed from the deanship but retained as a professor. In 1876 he was again made dean of the faculty and continued to serve as such till 1884 when he declined further service as such. In September, 1894, he entered upon his 27th consecutive year as a lecturer to the law students, in the Wisconsin University. In 1885 he was appointed judge of the Dane county court by Hon. I. M. Rusk then governor of the state to fill a vacancy. In 1886 he was again appointed by Governor Rusk to the same office to serve a full term of four years. In 1889 he was elected to the same place without opposition. In 1893 he was again elected without opposition to the same place, which term expired in January, 1898. He once ran for the district attorneyship of Dane County and was defeated. Once he ran for the mayoralty of Madison and was beaten. Several times he has been a member of the common council and president thereof. In September, i894, he was in vigorous health, attending to official duties and lecturing to law students. |

Notes for ALFRED PATRICK CARPENTER: He fitted at Suffield, Conn., for the junior class in Brown university, supporting himself in the meanwhile by teaching and by manual labor. He taught one year in Madison, Wis. Military: While temporarily residing in St. Charles. Minn., he enlisted in the 1st regiment Minnesota volunteers, May 23, 1861, and fought in 20 battles, among which were Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam and Gettysburg. He was wounded in each of the two battles last named. In this regiment he became corporal and then sergeant After carrying a musket two and a half years he was transferred to the 2d U.S. colored infantry. He had previously organized and drilled a company of colored troops in Washington, and he was appointed 1st lieutenant of Company K of the 2d colored infantry and marched down broadway, N.Y. at the head of his company to embark for the south. His regiment was ordered to Key West. In the spring of 1864 he was ordered north on account of failing health. In August of the same year be was so far recovered as to be able to join his regiment, though friends urged a longer stay, as the yellow fever was making havoc with his troops. He died of yellow fever at Key West, and sleeps in a nameless grave. A purer patriot or a nobler young man never belonged to any army. He has given to his country all he had to give, and cheerfully. After three years of service he might have returned with honor, but he had no disposition to consult his ease in times like these and only seemed anxious to be at the post of duty." |
