Notes for E
LISHA CARPENTER:
Judge Carpenter was brought up on his father's farm and divided his time between agricultural labor and study. When 17 years old he was sufficiently well advanced in his studies to engage in school teaching, his first charge being in the town of Willington in the northern part of the state. He continued to teach at intervals during a period of seven years. He prepared himself for college at the Ellington institute. Several circumstances combined to prevent him carrying Out his intentions regarding a college education and in 1844 he began to study law. He had a thorough legal training in the office of Jonathan A. Welch of Brooklyn, Conn., and in December, 1846, was admitted to the bar. He soon engaged in active practice in his native place. He remained there until March, 1851, when he
removed to Danielsonville, succeeding to the practice of the Hon. Thomas Backus.

"Three important changes in the judiciary of Connecticut went into effect on Sunday, Jan. 14, 18--. Justice Elisha Carpenter of the Suprenie Court of Errors will retire on account of age limitation. It will be gratifying to the citizens of Connecticut to know that although retired from the bench while in the full vigor of his intellect the state will yet be able to have the benefit of Justice Carpenler's ripe experience and judicial acumen in another capacity, that of a state referee, to which he was appointed by the General Assembly at its last session. Judge
Elisha Carpenter has had a continuous service of nearly 33 years on the bench of his native state. He was born in that portion of the town of Ashford now known as Eastford. He received a common school and academic education. Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court Bench he had been a Judge of Probate and
also State's Attorney for Windham county. He had also served two terms in the State Senate. The last term was in 1857. In 1858 he was returned to the State Senate from the old Fourteenth District. Judge Carpenter was president pro tern. during that session. In 1861 he represented the town of Killingly, in the General Assembly and served as chairman of the Committee on military affairs and was appointed Judge of the Superior Court, July 4.1861, and was promoted to the Supreme Bench in 1865. Shortly after his first appointment to the bench, he moved to Wethersfield and afterwards to the City of Hartford where he has since resided. He has written the opinion of the Supreme Court in some of the most important cases presented to the court for decision and has always been considered an authority in will cases, his opinion in such actions having always been considered of the highest value.

He was re-elected for three successive terms of eight years each and at the expiration of his constitutional age limit he lacked but one month of twenty-eight years of continuous service. He held the office for a longer time than any other judge since the adoption of the constitution and for twenty-three years, previous to 1889, he was the youngest man on the bench. He was an efficient member of the state board of education from its organization in 1865 to 1883. For some years he served on the state board of pardons. He was a republican in politics. Judge Carpenter was a man of absolute personal integrity and his rulings and decisions were regarded as just and able. About fifteen years ago Judge Carpenter suffered a shock which left him with a permanent lameness. On January 17, 1895, he fell near the corner of Garden and Asylum streets and broke his left hip, an accident which confined him to bed for several months. During his illness he fell in his room and retarded his recovery. Since getting out he had been wheeled about the city in an invalid chair by his faithful attendant, L. B. Denison. Judge Carpenter was gradually gaining physical strength in the injured leg and just before his last attack was able to walk upstairs to his office in the Hills block. Soon after retiring from the supreme bench in January, 1894, Judge Carpenter formed a law partnership with Frank B. Williams in this city, believing
that he was still able to continue the practice of his cherished profession. His advice has been freely sought by those who knew of his admirable judicial qualities and appreciated the sound judgment of his trained legal mind. The General Assembly of 1895 elected him one of the state referees with a salary of $2,000 per year.

As soon as Judge Carpenter came to Hartford to live, about twenty-five years ago, he joined the Asylum Hill Congregational church and was for several years a deacon in the church. He conducted a Bible class of men in the Sunday-school until about a year ago. Ex-Judge Dwight Loomis and he both taught in the same Bible class at the same time.

An extract from a letter written by Judge Carpenter to David Carpenter of Foxboro, Mass.,, dated Hartford, Jan.20, 1894: "As a preliminary statement I would say that Amos B. Carpenter has all the information (you desire): some of it I furnished him from land records of this state about 40 years ago. Through his assistance I was able to trace my ancestry back to the original William, who with his sons William and Joseph came to this country from the parish of Horwell, Eng.
Signed) ELISHA CARPENTER.
