Ilona was born in Szolnok, Hungary, 1909. She became an accomplished dressmaker and designer. She married Erno Grunfeld and had 1 child, Laszlo Grunfeld. The family name was forced to be Hungarianized to Gardonyi in the early 1950's. She survived Auschwitz concentration camp and returned to Budapest to live with her sister Julianna and brother-in-law Lajos. After a number of years, Erno was released from Russian slave labor camp and they were reunited. The Gardonyi family escaped the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and emigrated to the United States. Ilona and Erno eventually moved from New York to Florida. Ilona survied her husband by a few years and lived to be in her 90's.
