Marriage Notes for Elizabeth Agnes McCleary and Gordon G. Dunnaway:
Aunt Betty, as Elizabeth was known by us children had a very hard time as a child as did her other siblings. Her Mother and Father (Mary Josephine Walsh and Hugh McCleary died in 1910, in an influenza epidemic. At the time, Mary Ann McCleary was considered to be too old for the orphanage. Mary was taken in by the Walsh family. Anna May was too young to go to the orphanage and was adopted by Schafer family who changed her name to Helen. That left Josephine, Elizabeth, John and Catharine to go to the orphanage in Galveston, TX. It was run by the Incarnate Word Sisters of Charity.
Elizabeth became a nun. (Sister Theckla) She was smuggled out of the convent by sympathetic sisters.
Elizabeth was a registered nurse, having been trained as such in the convent. She met and married her first husband Gordon Dunaway, who was a Captain on the San Antonio Police force. After several years that marriage ended in divorce. She later married a second time to a Mr. Starnes. She died in San Antonio, TX. on June 5, 1972 of cancer. She had no children.
