William Max Garner (b. February 01, 1915, d. February 1970)

William Max Garner (son of William Andrew Garner and Mary Viola Cox) was born February 01, 1915 in Womble, AR., and died February 1970 in Cincinatti, OH.. He married Mary Celeste Eichling, daughter of Charles William Eichling and Athenais Louise Babin.

Notes for William Max Garner:
Uncle Bill was quite a character! He left home at the tender age of 14, and headed for the "Bright Lights' of Show Business. Oddly enough, because of God given talent in the form of a really fine Baritone singing voice, he became an Opera singer and toured with the St. Louis Opera Company for many years.He also appeared as a "Chorus Boy" in several Broadway productions. One being Roberta, in which Bob Hope began his career. Bill counted among his friends many who later became famous in Hollywood. Among them Jimmy Cagney and Burgess Meridith, who both started out as "song and dance" men. He served during WWII with the 5th Infantry Division in the Pacific theater and was severely wounded in combat on the island of New Britain. He was subsequently "invalided out" from active duty,and given a medical retirement because of his war wounds. He retired in the grade of Lt. Col. Upon his release fro the hospital, he immediately joined a USO touring company, and entertained our troops in both Europe and the Far East. In 1946 he returned home and was employed by Beuna Vista Films, a Walt Disney Company. Bill died at an early age as a result of his old injuries and diabetes.

As a young boy of 7 of 8, I recall attending an out door performance of the St Louis Opera company in an outdoor amphitheater which was located next to the Seal Pens at the St Louis Zoo. Each time the chorus
hit their high notes,. The Seals went wild flapping their fins and loudly burping/
