William Andrew Garner (b. September 08, 1874, d. January 27, 1953)

William Andrew Garner (son of James Edward Garner and Catherine Elizabeth Groves) was born September 08, 1874 in Courtland, MS. Panola County, and died January 27, 1953 in Dardanelle, AR.. He married (1) Evalenor (Eva) Winget. He married (2) Mary Viola Cox on August 08, 1902, daughter of Robert Russell Cox and Mary Virginia Hatchett.

My earliest recollections of Gran-Pa Will A. as he was called by us kids, is of a giant of a man with a full shock of unruly white hair. I suppose I was only 4 or 5 years old. Will A, was a strict disciplinarian and ruled with an iron hand. An unfortunate consequence of which, was the alienation of his children. I believe all of his children left home at the early age of 14 or 15. He was the first rural mail carrier in Yell county, Arkansas. He delivered the mail first on horse back, then later on by Buggy. He was employed as a Forrest ranger and worked in the Ouachita National For rests in Arkansas for many years.
Prior to his retirement from Civil Service he was employed by what is now called BATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms under the treasury department. He worked as a compliance officer, insuring that federal tax was paid by the brewing companies and liquor distillers. Upon his retirement, he moved back to Dardanelle, AR. where he lived out his life. He was a Republican in an area that was then predominately Democratic. This made for some lively discussions in and around the old garner home place.
