bullet Vernald Pauline BARNHART was born on 26 Oct 1907 in Livingston Co., Blackstone, IL. She died on 20 Dec 1994 in Maricopa Co., Phoenix, AZ. Vernald, known only as "Auntie" by her nieces, was 5'6" in height, thin, pretty, and believed in proper posture. She never married and cared for her parents until their deaths.

After graduating high school, she obtained a teaching position in a rural, "one-room schoolhouse." As the school was quite a few miles from town, she boarded with a couple who loaned her the use of their horse to travel to and from school. She remembered quite a few nervous experiences on that horse until they learned to "understand" each other.

After many years of working while attending college, Vernald received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools near Greeley. She used to tell of the poverty in which most of her students lived. Many times their lunches consisted of bread crumbs. She was always recognized and remembered by someone (student, friend, teacher) and was spoken to with fondness and respect.

Vernald liked bright colors and glittery jewelry. Her kitchen was decorated in red, orange, and yellow, but the living room was attractive in greens, aquas, and blues. After retirement, she attended several classes in aerobics, art, bridge, lapidary, poetry, etc. She loved bridge and played two or three times a week for many years. One or two poems were published. Several of her paintings are quite good, which surprised even herself. She said she never missed being married and never felt lonely. Loved retirement--she had the time to do all those things she could not do before.

The old house on 7th Avenue held many childhood memories. The small, dark "coal room" in the basement was a place of mystery--similar to a hidden room. Before the modern furnace was installed, an old coal stove was used to heat the house. A small adjoining room was where the coal was stored. It was filled via a small window that would open to permit the coal slide to enter. The truck would then unload the purchased amount. When the house began to cool, Vernald would shovel more coal into the furnace. The coal room was later used for storage--we liked to think it was haunted. The old home was sold to the Bonnell Retirement Home in 1992. It was razed and is now a portion of their parking lot.
