"Henry Van Metres is on ye branch and was living on 'ye Trough,' Old Fields. Ye Trough is a couple of ledges of mountains impassable running side by side together for eight miles and ye river down between them, ye must ride round ye back of ye mountain for to get below them."

bullet Jacob VAN METER Captain was born about 1752 in Frederick Co., VA. He died on 12 Apr 1838 in Hardin Co., KY. "From the fact that Jacob Van Metre and his newphew Jacob, the son of Henry Van Metre, came together from the Muddy Creek Settlement, and both located in Severn's Valley Creek, not far apart, and each having mills, the elder was distinguished by the style of "Valley Creek Jake" and his nephew "Miller Jake" because of his milling persuits."

The two Van Meter's, Jacob Sr. and Captain Jacob, owned all land on both sides of Valley Creek, from Elizabethtown to Glendale and over to White Mills, 12,399 acres or more. His lay 5 miles from Elizabethtown near Glendale, some of the finest land in Hardin County.

Captain Jacob was given several grants of land for his Revolutionary Services and his services under General George Rogers Clark in taking the Northwest Territory. Parents: Henry VAN METER and Eve PYLE.

bulletJacob , Sr. VAN METER was born on 17 Mar 1722/23 in Somerset Co., NJ. He died on 16 Nov 1798 in Hardin Co., KY. About 1768-69 Jacob Van Meter disposed of his property in Virginia and deemed it desirable to move further west. With John Swan, Thomas Hughes and others they reached Muddy Creek and "tomahawked such enclosures as they desired." They returned and brought back their families and household effects on pack horses. The slaves walking and driving the stock.

The whole train (about 50 persons) followed the route cut by Braddock's Army as far as it lay, then they cut away for themselves. Swan and Van Metre located near each other on the same bottom land not far from the mouth of Muddy Creek (now Green Co., PA), in Ten Mile Country, a tributary of the Monongahela in Cumberland Township, where it appears that Jacob Van Metre had acquired a grant of 400 acres in 1759 (Hales Trans-Alleghany Pioneer, p. 259. Trans-Alleghany Mag. Vol. II, pp. 9-11) and settled there in 1770. Here the two neighbors erected a strong stockade which was known in the frontier as Fort Swan and Fort Van Metre. (PA archives, 3rd Series Bedford Co. Tax Transcript; Frontier Forts of PA, Vol II, p. 441).

It is recited in Collins History of kentucky, Vol. II that Jacob moved from Muddy Creek in southwestern Pennsylvania (then claimed as a part of Virginia territory) to what became Hardin County, Kentucky.

Jacob Van Metre, and wife Lettice Van Metre were charter members of the Severn's Valley Baptist Church, the oldest Baptist Church west of the Alleghany Mountains. It was established on June 17, 1781 under a green sugar-tree near Hynes Station, now Elizabethtown. The church was constituted with eighteen members by Elders, William Taylor, Joseph Barnett, Elder John Garrard became the first pastor. Three slaves, Mark, Bambo and Dinah the property of Jacob Van Metre were included in its original membership.

Jacob Van Metre produced the first grain grown in the vicinity of Elizabethtown. "It was ground by hand sifted through a course kerchief, made in bread with raccoon fat for shortening." Parents: John VAN METER and Margaret MOLLENAUER.

bullet John VAN METER was born on 14 Oct 1683 in Marbletown, Ulster, NY. He died on 13 Aug 1745 in Winchester, VA. Jan, or John Van Metre, as he afterward wrote his name, son of Jooste Jan and Sara du Bois Van Meteren, became a noted Indian trader and was a roving disposition, and spent much of his time from home in trading with friendly Indians. On one occasion he went in command of a band of Cong Indians on a trading expedition to Virginia and on this excursion he explored the country then almost unknown to white people, the valley of the South Branch of the potomac, known then by the Indian name, Wapatoma.

This man soon became sufficiently Americanized to spell his name John, instead of Jans, and to leave the "N" off Van Metren, and the name was handed down for several generations with the spelling Van Metre, instead of Van Meter as we of the present generation write it. When he returned home he urged his sons to lose no time in possessing that land, declaring that it was most beautiful and fertile.

"John Van Meter, Sr., a Dutchman from the Hudson, was an Indian trader and pioneer explorer of the Shenandoah Valley, who spied out the land about the time of Governor Spottswood's expedition in 1716. He equipped a band of Delaware Indians at his own expense and traveled far southward over unknown lands. On his return he advised his sons to take up lands in the Wappatomaka Valley, on the South Branch River above "the Trough" as it was the finest land he had ever discovered. Subsequently his sons John and Isaac took his advice and petitioned Gov. Gooch in 1731 for 40,000 acres, which they later transferred to Joist Hite, whose wife, Anna Maria du Bois, a near relative of Louis du Bois." Parents: Jooste Jan VAN METEREN and Sarah DU BOIS.
