bullet Mahala BROWN was born on 20 Oct 1838 in Warren Co., IN. (162) She died on 19 Mar 1929 in Dayton, Columbia Co., WA. (162) "The Missionary Monthly," United Brethren Building, Huntington, IN. Article: "Oldest Missionary Passes Away." No date.

OLDEST MISSIONARY PASSES AWAY. Mrs. Mahala Hadley Bridgeman, early missionary to Africa, died in the Brining Hospital, Dayton, Washington, on Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 1929. She was a member of the United Brethren Church, an ordained minister of the gospel and a member of the Walla Walla Conference.
Mahala Brown, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. David Brown was born in Warren County, Indiana, October 20, 1838. She attended Hartsville College (known at that time as Hartsville Univ.) where she prepared herself for Mission work in which she took a profound interest and to which she gave a lifetime of utmost devotion.
She was married June 24, 1864, to Rev. Oliver Hadley of Lafayette, IN, and for a time they lived at Frankfort, where their first child, a daughter, Mary, was born to them.
She and her husband accepted an appointment to Africa in 1866 and left their little daughter in the care of her grandparents. They set out on their long journey and reached Freetown, Africa, the following December.
History says that Mrs. Hadley "Was her husband's equal in effective evangelical labor." They labored at Shengay, building up a Sunday school, conducted prayer and class meetings, and preachings and together they rejoiced as success crowned their labors.
While there, their six week old baby daughter died. "We were alone and far from all Christian friends. There was no minister on whom we could call and no one to offer a word of comfort. Our tears fell thick and fast. Then I prayed while my husband tried to conduct the funeral service himself. God seemed near to us in our sadness, and with our own hands, we laid our baby in a grave under the trees in the Mission Compound."
The labors of Rev. D. O. Hadley terminated in Africa at the end of two and one-half years, when his rapidly declining health compelled them to leave Africa. While traveling home on the sailing ship, the captain's cabin (the only room with heat) was given up to the dying missionary and his little family which was comprised of a courageous wife and a little son. They reached their home in Indiana, April 21, 1869 and Rev. Oliver Hadley died one week later and very soon after his death their little son died also.
After Mrs. Hadley had, to some extent, recuperated from the hardships and sorrows of her first experience, she indicated her willingness to return to the work in Africa. She was reappointed by the Executive Committee and reached the Mission Station at Shengay, December 9, 1871, where she again labored faithfully until failing health compelled her to return to the home land in June, 1874. Later she traveled through Ohio and Pennsylvania in the interests of foreign mission work.
Quote from John Fetterhoff's diary, p. 205: "Saturday (Oct 1871). Sister Hadley, my wife and I went to Hagerstown and then to Shiloh, three miles from Hagerstown, to a Quarterly meeting. This meeting was attended with some good. Sunday night we met at Hagerstown. Sister Hadley spoke on the African mission. She was some embarrassed; she could not tell why."
In 1875, Mrs. Hadley was married to John Bridgeman of Amboy, Illinois. In 1885 they moved to the state of Washington, and first settled at Huntsville. A little later they moved to Columbia County and for years owned and operated a mountain ranch, where Mr. Bridgeman died twenty-six years ago (about 1903). Since that time, Mrs. Bridgeman has lived with her children near Bridgeport and with her elder daughter, Mrs. I. H. (Mary) Wilson of Dayton, Washington (Mrs. Wilson is the one-time little child who was left in the care of her grandparents while her mother and father were in the mission service in Africa.).
Her work is done; her crown is won--she is now at rest. Parents: David BROWN Rev. and Elizabeth EVINGER.

She was married to D. Oliver HADLEY Rev. on 24 Jun 1864 in LaFayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN.(162) Children were: Mary Elizabeth HADLEY, Ida Atlanta HADLEY, Oliver Burton HADLEY.

bulletMargaret BROWN was born on 31 May 1775 in PA.(281) (282) (283)(284) She died on 16 Jan 1857 in Veedersburg, Fountain Co, IN.(285) (280) "Margaret Hoobler was the daughter of Michael Brown, who emigrated from Germany to America and settled in Pennsylvania where Margaret was born. She was the aunt of Bishop William Brown, the eighth bishop of the United Brethren Church. Her husband and herself were both active members of the U.B. church in Pennsylvania. Her husband, Jacob Hoobler, dying in 1813, she reared the seven children, then moved to Ohio in 1822, and to Fountain County, Indiana, in 1826.
Margaret held the second annual U.B. conference at her home on August 30, 1831. She provided light bread from the oven, and corn dodger from her frontier baking process. The fattened animals were slaughtered and beef, pork and chicken in the "Pennsylvania Dutch" fashion was set before her ministerial guests. She perfected her savory repasts by providing a variety of vegetables, including potatoes and chicken gravy, with plenty of squirrel and venison added, to complete the gospel measure of old-fashioned United Brethren hospitality. She fully attested her hospitality by feeding those sixteen pioneer preachers for six days, and earned their lasting gratitude by providing good corn, oats and hay for all of their horses during the session of conference. In the work of cooking, table service and the other household duties, Sister Hoobler was assisted by her maiden daughter, Mary Hoobler, who at that time was twenty-seven years old, while the hostess, Margaret Hoobler, was fifty-six years of age."
She is buried in the Cold Springs Cemetery, about two miles northeast of Veedersburg. A marble tombstone about three and one-half feet high bears the inscription: "Margaret, wife of Jacob Hoobler, Died Janaury 16, 1857, aged 81 years, 7 months and 15 days. My rest is in heaven, My home is not here."
