Joseph W. L. CARTY was born about 1823.⁽³²¹⁾ He died in 1867. (Monocacy and Catoctin, Cartys of Frederick, p. 361): "Joseph W. L. Carty was known in Frederick not only for his popular tobacco shop, but also as the leader of the Lutheran Choir and superintendent of the Lutheran Sunday School. After Margaret Hardt Carty's early death, Joseph married Mary Lugenbeel. . . When Joseph Carty died suddently in 1867, at 44 years, diarist Engelbrecht recorded that the crowd at the funeral was one of the largest up to that time in Frederick (in spite of heavy rain). There were twice as many people as the Lutheran Church could accommodate. Joseph was a judge, clerk of the court, school commissioner, Director of the Frederick Co. Bible Soc. and belonged to the Odd Fellows, Red Men and the United Fire Co. Joseph had taught the tobacco trade to Melancthon Engelbrecht, son of the diarist's brother William."
