Birth Register of Olive shows mother as Nancy McGhee of Dodge Twp., and father as James Dee, farmer. She was unnamed at time of registry but shows a female and sixth child born of this mother on May 2, 1891 in Dodge Twp.

The Journal Advocate, Sterling, CO, May 29, 1971:

"Funeral services for Florence Olive Ashby, 80, of 215-1/2 Taylor, will be conducted 10 a.m., Tuesday, from the First Christian Church, the Rev. James Mullins officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Ashby died Friday in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born May 2, 1891, in Guthrie Center, Iowa, the daughter of James and Nancy Emeline McGhee Dee. She left Iowa when 1-1/2 years old, moving to Winnebago, Neb., with her family. They resided there until coming to Colorado in 1908, she married Walter Ashby in Sioux City, Iowa. He died Sept. 10, 1953. Mrs. Ashby was a member of the First Christian Church. She is survived by four sons, James C. Ashby, 215 Taylor, Sterling, Harold Ashby of Commerce City, Bernard Ashby of Longmont and Elton Ashby of Englewood; two daughters, Mrs. Erma Curtis of Stoneham and Mrs. Leone Reese of Sterling; 34 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Walters Funeral Home in charge of arrangements." Parents: James DEE and Nancy Emeline MCGHEE.

She was married to Walter ASHBY on 20 Dec 1906 in Woodbury Co., Sioux City, IA. Children were: James Calvin ASHBY , Harold W. ASHBY, Walter Bernard ASHBY, Erma Iola ASHBY, Edith ASHBY, Verle Clayton ASHBY, Leona Isabelle ASHBY, Elton ASHBY.

James was the son of Samuel Dee and Christina (Barr) Dee. He married Nancy McGhee. Her obit says that James Dee died in 1916. The above date is from the monument. Another source lists his death date as January 25.

WHEREAS, a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Sterling, Colorado has been deposited in the General Land Office, whereby it appears that, pursuant to the Act of Congress of May 20, 1862, "To Secure Homesteads to Actual Settlers on the Public Domain," and the acts supplemental thereto, the claim of James Dee has been established and duly consummated, in conformity to all, for the southwest quarter of Section twenty-five in Township five north of Range fifty west of the Sixth Principal Meridian, Colorado containing one hundred sixty acres. . . . June 2, 1913, By the President: Woodrow Wilson. . .Recorded: Patent Number 338772

James Dee served in the Civil War as a private in A. 2nd Ohio Inf. from August 1861-Sept. 1861. He also served in G. 95th Ohio Infantry. Finally discharged August 14, 1865. Dates are inconsistent with Certificate of Disability for Discharge, from Co. A 2nd Ohio Inf. granted on Nov. 8, 1862, for "consumption resulting from exposure in Nov. 1861 in Eastern Ky Campaign" (tuberculosis).

Walt Ashby remembers his grandfather, James Dee, as a very nice guy who called Walt "Old Man Souser" when he was little because he was "chunky like Mr. Souser." The Dees owned two work horses named Duke (black) and Carrie (bay). When the Dees had to go to town the horses were harnessed to the buggy and they would plod toward town looking like the work horses they were. At the edge of town, James would click the reins--Duke and Carrie would arch their heads and tails and prance through town. Once the reins were loosened on the way home, they returned to their work-horse status. The town folks thought James had one of the fanciest teams around, and Walt was amazed at how well the horses were trained. Parents: Samuel B. DEE and Christiana BARR.

Samuel B. DEE was born about 1811 in VT.⁽³⁹⁷⁾⁽³⁹⁸⁾ He died about 1871. "The State of Ohio, Knox County SS. I hereby certify that on the 27 day of October A.D. 1836 Mr. Samuel B. Dee and Christina Bair were legally joined in marriage by me a minister of the Gospel. Given under my hand this 23 day of December A.D. 1836. James Scott"

The 1860 Champ Co. Census, Woodstock, Rush Twp. listed three more children: Hilas, M 7 OH; Lucy, F 3 OH; and Philo, M 1 OH. They could possibly be grandchildren living with Samuel and Christina.
