(The following information was supplied by Sandra Parcher): Rev. War Pension File #R3477 - Mathias Featherhoff was drafted into the service of the United States as a militia man in the month of July, 1776 when he was 18 years of age. He applied for a pension February 16, 1839, at the age of 81 years. He stated he did not know any person living who had personal knowledge of his service as a soldier of the Revolution but Baltzer Overcash of Franklin County who served one tour in 1776 with him. His application was denied. In 1852, his son, Jacob, who was living at Two Taverns, Adams Co., PA, reapplied for the pension.

Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 7, pgs. 296-298: Mathias Feterhoffer is listed in 1782 as member of the 4th Company of the 3rd Battalion of Lancaster Co., PA. He was granted a $40 pension form the state of PA as per the act of april 15, 1835. Gratuity to date from Jan. 1, 1835.

There are numerous spellings of Mahaeus--Matthias--Mathias (Matthew) and Fetherhoff--Featherhoff--Feterhoffer--Feterhoff--Feterolf (interpretation used by the DAR) Federhaf--and Fetterhoff. The diary of Rev. John Fetterhoff, with foreword by W. O. Tobey, Chambersburg, PA, under date of May 24, 1883, published by the family of John Fetterhoff, referred to his parents as Mathias and Mary Fetterhoff:

Page 5: "I was born the 9th day of Sept. 1798, the son of Mathias and Mary Fetterhoff, living in the vicinity of Littlestown, Adams Co., PA, on the McSherry place where my mother died, whence father moved to Franklin Co., PA, when I was four years old." (This established the death of Mary Fetterhoff as before 1802.)

Page 7: "When I was eleven years old all my sisters had left father and as he was still a widower he homed with one of my sisters.....and I went to live with my brother and set in to learn his trade, viz pottery."

Page 15: "Uncle Overcashe's wife died and my youngest sister Rebecca went to keep house for him."

Page 202: "This day (August 10, 1872) got news by letter that my youngest andonly remaining sister Peggy, wife of Rev. John Hoobler, had died the 6th of this month."

Page 154 to 163: "One sister Elizabeth.....in Adams Co., (PA)." 155: "Went to Gettysburg to see my sister's son, Elias Sponseler, and next day went to see my oldest sister."

Page 52: "He (father) died the 26th day of May, A.D. 1840. His age was 81 years 6 months and 4 days."

Mathias was granted a $40 pension from the state of PA for his service during the Rev. War from Adams Co., PA by the Act of april 15, 1835. Granted to date from Jan. 1, 1835.

bullet Michael FEDERHAF Michael Fetterhoff was named by Rev. John Fetterhoff as a brother to his father, Matthias, pg. 26 of Fetterhoff Diary. "I had a beast now (bought a horse)--had brought it home, and concluded to visit one of my uncles, living in Sinking valley, 65 miles off, a brother to my father, named Michael." Started out two weeks before Christmas 1818.

1820 PA census shows a Fetterhoofmichael as head of household in Huntingdon Co., Morris Twp. This county is just west of the Juniata River. "...early, I reached the Juniata River, which I could not cross until midday on account of the ice. In twenty-five miles more I landed at my uncle's." Parents: Johan Georg FEDERHAFF and Maria Barbara ACKERMANNIN.

bullet Barbara FEDERHAFF was born about 1787. Apparently application for a Rev. War pension was made by Barbara Federhoff Bixler, Balthasar's only surviving child, in 1854, several years after Johan Baltzer's death. A letter in the file stated that Barbara was a resident of Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., PA, aged sixty-seven years. It was alleged that he was drafted in Bethel Twp. (later Lebanon Co.) PA and served as a teamster in the Revolution. The claim was not allowed as Barbara failed to furnish proof of any military service as required by the pension laws. (This information was furnished by Sandra Parcher, descendant and researcher). Parents: Johan Balthasar FEDERHAFF.
