John GARROD Rev.. Rev. John Garrod was the first pastor of the Severn's Valley Baptist Church, organized in June 1781 by Jacob Van Meter and his family. This is the oldest church west of the Allegheny Mountains, first church of any denomination at Elizabethtown, KY. Rev. Garrard went hunting and never returned. He was a cripple and was stolen or killed by the Indians. He was searched for to no avail.

"About three weeks ago Aunt Marjorie Barnhart and her son-in-law Donald Baum came for a visit. The Baums (June Baum is Marjories daughter and half-sister of Jay, Jr.) operate a winter resort (Yodel Inn) near Winter Park, Colorado. It's really a year-around resort but they have their best trade in winter. Marjorie looked good (74 yrs. old) but has had....."

(Excerpt from the history book of Sumner, MO, forwarded by Ida Epperson 7/8/96) "Marjorie married Jay Barnhart (deceased). Marjorie lives in her home in Sumner. They had a son Jay, Jr. who lives in Colorado. He is General Manager of Traffic Control for Braniff Air Lines where he has worked for thirty years. Jay has a daughter Kimberly who lives in Colorado. Marjorie has a daughter, June, by a former marriage. June and her husband Donald Baum live in Winter Park, Colorado."

Obituary in DNB dated 8 Mar 1993: "Marjorie M. Barnhart, 89, Sumner, died Monday at Pioneer Health Center, Marceline. She was born June 25, 1903, in Sumner, daughter of Henry Clay and Maude A. (Jaynes) Garton. She and Jay Barnhart were married. He died in October, 1932. Her parents also preceded her in death. Surviving, however, are a daughter, June N. Baum, Winter Park, Colo: son, Jay Barnhart, Parkville; sister, Juanita Phillips, Independence; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday, at the church, with the Rev. David Fitzmaurice officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Sumner. Visitation is noon to service time Thursday, at the church. Memorials may be made to the church, or American Legion Post 586, Sumner. Arrangements are by Heisel-Koch Funeral Home, Brunswick." Parents: Henry Clay GARTON and Maude A. JAYNES.
