bulletAlvin Jacob GILLMAN was born on 26 Jun 1866. He died on 17 Dec 1954. Memories of Jean Powell Keesee, via Donna Berge, June 16, 1997: Every Sunday Alvin and his seven children used to "show up" at Jemima's house for dinner. Sporting a new handlebar mustache one day, and while twirling the ends, he asked, "Aunt mimie, how do you like my new mustache?" Jemima promptly replied, "It looks like you swallowed a horse and his tail is sticking out!"

Alvin had six girls, until finally the seventh child was a boy. Jean remembers this poem that someone in Cornell came up with. She was just a little girl at the time, but remembers it to this day, and the fact that her parents admonished her never to recite it in the presence of Alvin!

"O Fudge," said the judge.
Gillman's got a baby.
O Joy, it's a boy,
And Alvin's almost crazy!" Parents: Michael Henry GILLMAN and Elizabeth KUNS.

bulletMichael Henry GILLMAN was born on 8 Sep 1832 in Yorkliffe, Bedfordshire, England. (518) He died on 14 Nov 1907 in IL. (518) Michael Henry Gillman was born in Yorkliffe, Bedfordshire, Old England. He sailed from Liverpool, England in 1855. He was naturalized in 1858. He married Elizabeth Kuns, daughter of Daniel Kuns. Daniel Kuns was born April 7, 1788 in Union County, State of Pennsylvania.

Henry operated a general store from 1859 to 1866 in a territory called New Michigan, Illinois. He also was a carpenter by trade, while his wife operated the store. During this era, Henry finally purchased land from the government and went to farming. His original purchase from the government was 40 acres of land at $7.00 per acre. Henry resided on the same homestead since his beginning of farming. Eventually, he obtained enough land to offer each child a farm, before he passed away.

Concerning the general store operation, wares were shipped down the Illinois Michigan Canal to Ottawa, Illinois, which at that time was a major waterway in this area. Railroads being nonexistent at this time, the merchandise was hauled from Ottawa, Illinois, to New Michigan by horse and wagon.

The only remaining landmark depicting the name of New Michigan is the New Michigan Cemetery. Many of the Leonard and Gillman descendants rest here.

bullet Samuel GOODIN From "Bits and Pieces" of Hardin County History by the Hardin County Historical Society, POB 381, Elizabethtown, KY 42702:

"In 1780 a group of 100 Kentucky pioneers, lead by Jacob Van Meter entered Severns Valley, Kentucky. It could very well be that twenty-three of them were members of a group that splintered off from the Van Meter colony while traveling through the Knobs and settled near present day Boston, KY. The leader of this "break-away" band was Samuel Goodin.

The circumstantial evidence that the Goodins and the Van Meters did travel together is convincing. Both families were from Greene and Fayette Counties, the "Ten Mile Country" of southwestern Pennsylvania. The early histories contend that both families arrived at the Falls of the ohio in 1779 and that both Van Meter's Fort and Goodin's Fort were established in 1780.

Furthermore, there is the matter of the many intermarriages between Van Meters and Goodins. Samuel Goodin married Elizabeth Kline Van Meter, widow of Abraham Van meter who was killed by a poisoned Indian arrow at Squire Boone's Painted Stone Fort. Samuel Goodin, Jr., married Margaret Garrard, the granddaughter of Jacob Van Meter, Sr. Later, the son of Samuel Goodin, Jr. and Margaret Garrard married the granddaughter of John and Rosannah Swank, who are listed in WHO'S WHO IN HARDIN COUNTY KENTUCKY as having come into Severns Valley with Jacob Van Meter.

It is clear that the people of the Van Meter colony and the Goodin colony knew one another well."

He was married to Elizabeth KLINE after 1780.
