Amelia is credited for saving the life of her niece, Vernald Barnhart, during an illness in infancy. Amelia nursed Vernald day and night until the fever broke and she began to recover. This close call left Vernald with a hearing loss. Parents: H. Meredith ARTHUR and Matilda BAKER.

She was married to Phineas Taylor BARNHART on 21 Dec 1898 in Linneous, MO. Children were: Earl D. BARNHART, Fern Harry BARNHART.

H. Meredith ARTHUR History of Logan County 1887-1987: "The P.T. Barnhart family came to Logan County from Sumner, Mo., in 1910, after hearing glowing reports from Mrs. Barnhart's mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Meredith Arthur, who had migrated to Logan County and homesteaded east of Sterling in 1907. Phin Barnhart, the son of Joseph and Kissiah Smith Barnhart, was born on June 15, 1876, at Sumner, Mo. and married Amelia Belle Arthur on Dec. 21, 1898 at Linneus, Mo."

Bladen ASHBY was born about 1759 in Bladensburg, MD. He died on 8 Dec 1828 in Wayne Co., IN. Bladen Ashby was buried on his farm in Ladoga, IN. Given DAR marker [DAR #103198] in 1931.

Will Book 1, Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana, p. 158; Will of Bladen ASHBY dated 25 Aug 1823:
"In the name of God Amen...etc....
First, I will, devise, and bequeath unto my beloved wife Caty ASHBY all and singular my estate both real and personal for her to dispose of at her pleasure, after having paid all my just debts.

Secondly, I do hereby appoint, ordain, and constitute my beloved son Abraham ASHBY sole executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and disannulling all other wills heretofore made by me.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty five day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three.

Bladen ASHBY mentioned several times in his official capacity as Justice of the Peace. p. 155, A deed from Bladen ASHBY and Catherine his wife to Christopher BUSH was acknowledged & ordered recorded July term 1798; p 156 Bladen ASHBY to John FUNK (FRANK?) July term 1798.

Private Bladen ASHBY #231 enlisted at Fort Pitt and belonged to Colonel John GIBSON's Detachment, Western Department, Continental Line from 1 Jan 1780 to 6 Dec 1781. He served also with George Rogers CLARK at Vincennes and was taken by CLARK from the British and the Indians. He was a hunter, scout, and Indian fighter. He served also in James KNOX's Company and in Captain Peter ASTURGUE's Company of Kentucky.

Sworn statements by Easter PENLAND (90 years old on 25 May 1903) and Nancy MARRS (93 years old in 1913) stated that Bladen told them many times of entering the Army as a spy under General George WASHINGTON at the age of 16. Later he enrolled as a Private. After serving in that capacity for three years he served under General WASHINGTON until the close of the War. Also, there were several letters from his grandchildren stating the same.

Bladen ASHBY had 500 acres surveyed 17 June 1784, Jefferson Co., KY, as shown in U.S. Grants of Kentucky Lands.

Bladen moved to quarter section No. 12 on the middle fork of the Whitewater River. The town of Middleboro was built just south of the bridge on the land of Bladen Ashby. Much of Ashby's land was sold off in small lots for homes and quarries and also for a schoolhouse, and when the final holding was sold, only the south half of the section had remained. This south half was known as the Boyd farm and is one of the most attractive homesteads in the township. The house stands on an eminance and is the third to stand on this spot. Perhaps the only building remaining is the springhouse which has a flowing spring supplying running water. (We still use this old stone springhouse and the spring is still our water supply.} This springhouse was built by Bladen and was still in use in 1964.

The first house built by Ashby was a log house and to the south of it a blockhouse for protection against the Indians. South of the house was planted an orchard, now gone, and in the southwest corner of this orchard is an old and neglected cemetery.

Bladen was named after the town of his birth, Bladensburg, MD. After the war he settled in Hardin County, KY and married Catherine VAN METER who was also quite active in Revolutionary enterprizes. His home was in Elizabethtown, and Warner's book on Lincoln's parentage contains his name as one of the trustees of the academy located there.

Bladen and family lived on this farm for 20 years. Bladen died in 1828 and was buried on the farm. The land was sold by his widow in 1832 to Silas BOND and his wife moved to Cass County, Michigan, where she lived with her daughter, Eleanor, and died in 1835. Calvin C. ASHBY was born about 1855 in IA. History of Woodbury: Sloan Township, p. 395, references a C. C. Ashby as being an officer (July 1890) of Sloan Lodge, No. 465, I. O. O. F., as rec. sec.

Present officers of Sloan Encampment, No. 71, I. O. O. F., was instituted April 2, 1888, and lists a C. C. Ashby as holding the office of scribe.

C. C. Ashby, son of William & Eliza Farley Ashby, married Adelphia M. Fox, daughter of Absalom W. Fox, July 4, 1881 at Tama City. C. C. was living near Irving, Iowa. Parents: William ASHBY and Eliza FARLEY.

Catherine ASHBY was born about 1733. Parents: Robert , Sr. ASHBY and Elizabeth BOTTS.

Catherine ASHBY was born on 27 Feb 1848 in Kosciusko Co., IN.⁽¹¹¹⁾ She died on 9 Jan 1918 in Chelsea, Tama Co. Salt Creek Twp., IA. I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Section 8, Salt Creek Twp., Tama County, Iowa: Shugart, Cathrin. Born: 27 Feb 1847. Died: 9 Jan 1918. Wife of YG [sic] Shugart. YG [sic] born: 22 Oct 1827; died: 2 July 1908, husband of Cathrin.

Obituary of Mrs. Kathryn Stevenson, Toledo (Iowa) Chronicle, Thursday, January 17, 1918, states she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. W. Boyer. When two years of age, she came with her parents to Iowa and settled in Louisa county, where they remained for two years and came to Tama county where she spent the remainder of her life, excepting the last seven years which she spent in Marshalltown. Besides her six children, there were two step-children, Klyde (Noah Kalita) and Laura (Mrs. Beale), these were Nancy Overturf's children. David Dale was listed as a half-brother. Apparently, her mother's maiden name was Wilder, Dale was first marriage, and Shugart was the second marriage. The letter from Mr. Mikkel Mikkelson to Tama County Historical Society noted that his grandmother recalled the names Drake rather than Dale, and Carol rather than Catherine. Also she quoted Hankersons three marriages in the order of (1) Peggy Frammel, (2) Susanna Pemberton, (3) Mary Ann Drake. Census and marriage records prove that Catherine was born to Mary Ann Wilder in 1848 and Hankerson married Susanna in 1850. Land deeds show that in 1855 Hankerson and wife, Susanna, sold land to Levi Marsh. (The obit noted death date as 1917 rather than 1918.] Parents: Hankerson ASHBY and Mary Ann WILDER.

Catherine ASHBY was born about 1850.⁽¹¹⁴⁾ 1850 census Michillimackinac (now Emmet) Co., Michigan, enumerated 15 Sep 1850, p. 150. Inasmuch as two Catherines are listed, it is probable that the first one died prior to birth of second. It was customary in those days to name a second child by the name of another who died recently.
